The town of Belton is amazing with many shops and restaurants and a beautiful Courthouse. This museum in particular was ok. It is very small with not a lot of artifacts but it is free so if you're on a budget then this is the perfect place to visit and learn some history of the area. There is a small gift shop on the main floor as well but they don't have a lot to choose from. The museum was ok for a one time visit but no need to return again.

I've been here a few times, considering I live in Belton. Might seem weird leaving a review for somewhere I live, but if it helps the community I am down for it. It is a great, free museum for kids and adults. There are two floors, the first floor with a digging area and the second for more recent events, like cowboys and art. Speaking of which, you can come for art events or even for holidays. I know for a fact that it is open on Halloween, and you are encouraged to wear a costume. They also have candy for children, and it is a great place to Trick-Or-Treat. It is overall a great place.

We love this place so much we joined it and make annual contributions. It has great permanent collections and wonderful, thoughtful rotating exhibits. Worth a special trip.

This small museum chronicles the history of Bell County (TX), founded in 1850 and named for Peter Hansborough Bell, third governor of Texas. It also features special exhibits, such as a recreation of an early settler's cabin, the archeology of the area and more. Begun in the environs of the old Carnegie Library, where I spent many happy hours as a young person, the original structure is interesting in and of itself. Personal disclaimer: several of the exhibits were donated by members of my family.

This museum looks small from the outside but it really has a lot of exhibits that are really interesting and well-maintained.

This museum had a modern addition attached to an historic building as well as a reproduction of a log cabin. There were loads of interactive exhibits. A huge focus was on archaeology. We learned that they have evidence of people living in central Texas as far back as 13,400 years ago! The exhibits were kid-friendly--you could open drawers and view pieces of bones and other artifacts. There was video telling about current archaeological digs near the museum. There were many collections of antique dishes, clothing, miniatures, etc. Up a ramp to the second floor, we viewed a gallery featuring photographs of women who have served as US senators. We also learned about the "Sanctified Sisters." There were also docents eager to share their knowledge -- very satisfying visit!

We really enjoyed this museum. It's free, easy to find, and the staff is friendly. There are 2 floors of well organized and impressive displays, especially for a smaller town. Our favorites included the "cotton picking" room where we heard an interview of a lady's actual pickin' days & felt the basket of real cotton. Also, the early Texas settlers room, old letters and belongings, and land grants. Our kids enjoyed trying the old water pump, chuck wagon, and locating the land grants using the map challenge. The log cabin is neat! It took us a little over 1 hour to tour the whole museum, and then visited the gift shop. So glad we stopped here while traveling through town! Shops and restaurants are nearby. Definitely would recommend this place.

From the outside, this looks like a better-than-average small town museum with a collection of old teacups and newspapers. But inside (and in the field), this becomes one of the premier archeology museums. Since they partnered with the Gault School of Archeological Research to sponsor tours of the nearby Gault Site, Bell County Museum has become a must see for students of Clovis and pre-Clovis Culture (13,500 years old). The Gault Site has so far produced over 2 million artifacts and has extended the knowledge of early man in America by 1000 years.
For the free museum itself, allow 1 hour. Four stars and an exclamation point.
Site tours are held about once every 3 months (see website) at a cost of $10. Allow 4 hours. This rates five stars with an exclamation point.

I took my kids on a quick visit and we were surprised at everything they've got. We will definitely come back. We did not have time to read and see everything on detail. Some rooms have activities for kids and keeps them entertained! You can make your visit from one hour to four hours and still have some left. For sure, you cannot miss this place if you are around Belton.
