We decided to travel to the Tail of the Dragon via the Foothills Parkway. Drive to the Tail of the Dragon was very nice, with many scenic overlooks. We were not a fan of the Tail of the Dragon - especially when we got to the end and realized the only way back was to travel the same route.

Great scenery, sunrise, sunset, mist in the valley, hiking trails. Easy to get to from Townsend. The parkway ends at Chilhowee dam on the Little Tennessee River and route 129, an exciting drive in itself.

This review is of the Foothills Parkway between Walland, Tennessee and Chilhowee Lake. There is a lot of confusion about the Parkway since both ends are finished but the middle section is not due to long-standing funding problems. The Walland-Chilhowee section of the parkway traverses the crest of Chilhowee mountain and provides spectacular views of the Tennessee Valley to the... More

We use this road often to travel from Pigeon Forge to Maryville and beyond because it is scenic and the traffic is light. We have eaten at a few places along the way and the food was good but nothing outstanding.

Good little trip off rt 321. If you look on a map you'll see that you can make a very large loop. Take left at Chilhowee lake and go through the dragons tail (very curvy) into deals gap. If you live to ride, ride to live, this is a must do. Cruise on up by Fontana dam and hammer down... More

This was a great road to ride. We used this road to connect to US129 nice sweeping corners a respectable speed limit. Bonus not alot of traffic. We stopped at s several of the over looks. Good view of Cades Cove. Ride it several times during the week end.

Nice drive away from all of the traffic of the Smoky Mountains with nice views. We hiked to the fire tower on Look Rock and enjoyed the view. If you go to the parking area you have to walk over to the sign on the road to figure out where the trail is. Once there it is a good trail... More

I guess after the Tail of the Dragon became a destination years ago, folks thought it would be OK to have other roads called a destination. But the Foothills Parkway is anything but that. It's a great connecting route between two points and it has some wonderful views, but I wouldn't drive there looking for anything special in the way... More

We were just following our GPS and it directed us across what we were afraid would be a poorly maintained rural road. Instead we were thrilled to have a wonderful road with several areas where we could pull off and enjoy the incredible mountain views. This may be our new favorite route to the Smokies!

It is so easy to get caught up in the shopping and the entertainment, not to mention the food, when visiting the Smokies. Foothills Parkway is one finished part of a bigger unfinished, and I fear forgotten, road system. Don't miss this part of the Foothills Parkway accessible from either end at Walland, TN US-321 or Chilhowee Lake at US-129.... More
