Owner description: Puffing Billy is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. An historic steam train still running regularly in the mountain district it was built to serve at the turn of the century. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s. Puffing Billy is now a major tourist attraction, its operation depending on hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

Not cheap but worth it. You trundle gently along the track and the views are spectacular. At the end of the line wander round in the trees and round the lake. This is a tick in the box item; you must do it but not sure I will ever bother again

It was a great experience, even though I'm not a train fan. The atmosphere was superb, all those feet hanging out of the windows, a lot of people with big smiles on their faces, people waving to each others, great landscape view, etc. Gratitude and respect to those volunteers (and employees) working on this network. Keep up the good work!

It was my first experience in a steam train, I definitely enjoyed puffing billy! We purchased a return ticket from Belgrave to Lakeside which costs $49. Lakeside is only half way through the railway. You can also choose to continue your journey to Gembrook with a different ticket. I just wanted the 'experience' and I felt that the roundtrip journey... More

Our family loved it!! We caught the 2.30 train from Belgrave and there were seats for everyone in the public carriages. It was wonderfully scenic on the right side of the train where we sat with our legs dangling out of the windows. We enjoyed the landscape of rolling hills and forest during the hour long ride to Lakeside station.... More

Take a step back in time, ride the rails with Puffing Billy, and if it's lunchtime why not dine in the period dining car while enjoying a superb 3 course meal - of course you'll need a good wine to accompany the food! How many of us adults today have enjoyed the wonders of steam trains? The atmosphere is awesome... More

I recently took my second trip on Puffing Billy when on a holiday in Melbourne Australia. I can honestly say it was as good this time as it was the last.

Every Christmas say public transport in Melbourne is free - hop on the Belgrave rail line to the end stop and visit the charming Puffing Billy steam train and station lovingly restored by steam enthusiasts. This is the only time of year the steam train does not run but you get a chance to admire its engineering up close -... More

The sounds, the steam pouring from the funnel, the red hot coal, the conductors, driver, guards all in uniform, the open carriages and beautiful sceney make this is a unique and wonderful experience! Pack a picnic lunch, take your camera, wear closed in shoes so you can hang your feet out the windows of the carriages and talk to the... More

A lovely scenic ride on a beautiful train! Our view was mostly people's backyards, but it was still a fun ride :P We booked with a tour group, so our carriage was reserved and not too packed. All in all, a nice day. Would definitely recommend for kids.
