Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne.

Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s.

Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

Our grandson was turning 5 and the family decided to go on Puffing Billy for his Birthday. We meet at Belgrave, having bought our tickets online (which I would suggest you do to avoid being disappointed) we quickly got through the queue and waited on the station to depart. Staff were dressed in uniform to enhance the experience of being... More

This is a wonderful experience on a steam train for all the family. Very friendly staff and very helpful. Even the oldies sit with their legs hanging over the bars.

We had a really enjoyable day travelling on Puffing Billy this Sunday. The weather was glorious for Melbourne in Spring. I would suggest booking on line beforehand if you are travelling on a Sunday as the crowds were large and trains were already booked out when we got there. Good to see that the family ticket was two adults and... More

We went on this excursion and our little one had a totally mind blowing day, the excitement and enjoyment on her face was well worth the effort that we put in to organizing this trip. The day involved a trip on the train pulled by Thomas as well as other activities.

A good way to get to Puffing Billy is the suburban train to Belgrave, which takes you very close to Puffing Billy station. I would recommend going the end of the line to Gembrook. A nice little town with bakery, supermarket, café etc. Plus that way you get to see the whole scenery along the way. Enjoy this nostalgic train... More
