Puffing Billy is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. An historic steam train still running regularly in the mountain district it was built to serve at the turn of the century. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s. Puffing Billy is now a major tourist attraction, its operation depending on hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

What a gem of  a ride.  If you are a fan of steam trains or just love the adventure of travel from a bygone era then this is a fabulous experience. In the cooler months remember that it will be particularly cold as the windows are all open. Wear lots of layers (or get that rug out of your boot... More

A great trip not to be missed. We took the 11.10 am train to Gembrook on a Sunday morning and arrived back at around 4.30 pm. Car parking is close and free so no hassles about leaving your car. Some tips: Its cold in the cooler months so take plenty of warm clothes and a rain jacket if rain is... More

Had to wake up early but the quaint train ride was worth the efforts. See a steam train engine steaming in front of you. Lots of photos to take here!

We got on the train at Belgrave and rode to Lakeside where we got out, had lunch and walked around the lake before heading back. The staff are friendly and offer information and are happy to answer any questions. The view from the train is lovely - farmlands, trees, houses and mountains. A worthwhile way to spend an afternoon.

About 50 minutes outside Melbourne, at the beginning of the Dandenong Mountain Range, is the charming town of Belgrave. Since the early 1900s Belgrave has been the home of the narrow-guage steam engine known as Puffing Billy. A landslide in 1953 put the railroad out of business, but the locals were determined to salvage the steam engine train experience they... More

Basically it costs a family of 2-6 members, assuming 2 adults) about $100 for 3 hours of train fun. I think it's worth it. Friendly staff get you settled. You can hang your legs out and really get into the ride. And bring your own lunch to munch on. Good times.

Brilliant fun. Loved everything about this quaint trip. The staff were courteous and kind, the views spectacular and the train fascinating. hanging your feet over the edge was a bit too scary for me but the kids loved it!

Driver and conductors were friendly and enthusiastic, pre booked and showed barcode on phone to scan for tickets. Kids loved hanging their legs out and especially going around the bends, over the bridges. Quite expensive but fun. Tip, if 2 families travelling together can ring for tickets and they might give discount plus reserve part of a carriage so you... More

No overseas or interstate visitor should miss the Puffing Billy. It doesn't travel through any wilderness areas or eco-sensitive rain forests. It's just a great little experience. My wife and grand-daughter did the train trip while I drove ahead and took photos of them at the various level crossings. A terrific way to spend a couple of hours.
