Owner description: Puffing Billy is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. An historic steam train still running regularly in the mountain district it was built to serve at the turn of the century. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s. Puffing Billy is now a major tourist attraction, its operation depending on hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

Rather expensive tickets at $99 for a family. The return trip to Lakeside is quite long overall. The atmosphere and scenery is interesting in the beginning but for older school aged kids the novelty does not take long to wear off. It is much more popular with families with toddlers. The timetabling could be improved upon, for example an extra... More

The Puffing Billy is an amazing experience to have at least once in a lifetime. The railway stations are old timely and very authentic. The train itself is fun for all ages and if you want you could stick your legs out the window.

A trip on the Puffing Billy was most enjoyable. We went from Belgrave to the lake and back. Hot day so everyone sat on the side of the train with legs hanging over the side - great fun, our daughter, aged 7 could not believe we were allowed to do it! Our 5 year old did it for a while,... More

Nice experience, and something different to do if you're in the area. It isn't the cheapest attraction, but it is pretty unique. tip: The park at the end of the line is so nice, and a popular spot in summer.

We did this trip on a rainy and cold day however the train was a very enjoyable experience for us. The scenery was beautiful and green and the kids loved sitting in the train and watching scenery go past. We seen a couple of parrots and a rabbit along the way. We did not stop of at the lake for... Good honest fun, nice views, beautiful countryside. As the steam train winds its way through forests and small towns you feel the wind in your hair, soot on your cheeks and your arm aches from waving at people - everyone, and I mean everyone waves - I think there must be a local law or something.

Wonderful experience from start to finish. Great little railway run and staffed by volunteers. Relaxed trip through the forest with a chance to hop off at stations along the route.

Unfortunately it was a busy day and there were more passengers than seats and there were unpleasant situation of passengers fighting for seats and many had to stand. Tickets are not cheap and the views are ok.

I went there with my Dad one Sunday by train from North Brighton to Belgrave then we caught the Pulffing Billy Train from Belgrave all the way to Lakeside. We both had a terrific time.

My husband and I tried to book online for 2nd Jan but all online bookings taken so arrived at 9am at the station and were pleased to get tickets. All the staff and volunteers were so friendly and looked great in their authentic uniforms. The train had the diesel engine due to fire restrictions and we thought it was great,... More
