PUFFING BILLY OPERATES DAILY EXCEPT CHRISTMAS DAY.

Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne.

Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s.

Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

It was a nice experience.. until we were not allowed to get off the train on the station that we wanted. So our plan was to ride the train from Belgrave to Emerald station (31$ each) then get off and take the bus to Dandenong ranges. Everything was perfectly timed with more or less 30 minutes in between. When we... More

Dear Iris V Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback. There's no reason why you shouldn't have been able to disembark at Emerald station, even though most of our passengers choose to travel on to Lakeside. Can you please email us at puffing.billy@pbr.org.au and let us know what train departure and date you travelled? This... More

We had a return trip of Puffing Billy Railway on 4/11/2015. Although it was a raining day, we enjoy it very much. Before departing the Lakeside station, my friend found that he lost his mobile phone. Although we tried our best to search it, we couldn't find it. So we report to the volunteers in Belgrave station, they called to... More

It was the highlight of my 2015-2016 Melbourne trip. Even as an adult I am still very excited to see the steamy trains. They are still in excellent condition, and the best part is all staffs are dressed up for them. Recommended to go all the way to Gembrook. There are nice Cafes near the train station. If you are... Went from Emerald station to lakeside. Short trip - about 20mins, but it was plenty for my children. The Emerald station was manned by a lovely gentlemen, who showed us a great shady car spot. It was a wonderful to see the lovely countryside while sitting with our feet hanging out of the train. The staff at both stations were... More

Lucky to be taken here for a day out while staying with relatives..Lovely day out.Planned to arrive for the first train trip of the day but found parking an issue, so missed it. That said we got the next train which worked better for us, as arrived at Lakeside just in time for a spot of lunch. Not all items... More

I went with my partner, we decided to go to the Lakeside departure point as you don't have to book there for the steam train and we were pleasantly surprised, as there was a nice lake and a shallow pool for kids and adults to have a paddle in, lots of nice scenery if just fancied to go for a... After travelling on many other preserved railways around the world this one takes some beating. Remarkably laid back letting you hang out of the carriage windows whilst travelling over wooden trestle bridges. The train crews were very friendly and showed their locomotives off with great pride. The guards were very informative and helpful. We travelled through some beautiful and spectacular... More

It doesn't get better than being in an historic railway dining car, eating a three course luncheon that any top hotel would be proud to serve, all whilst enjoying the stunning forest scenery. Service staff made sure all diners were happy and the many volunteers manning the stations kept the train running smoothly on schedule. A great day trip. Enjoyed... More

Took the kids to puffing billy on Australia Day. They were so excited. Had to wait for over 4 hours to access the barbeque facilities, therefore missed the actual train ride. Best to take pre cooked foods. Fail!!
