Owner description: Join one of Wales' top mine explorers on an exploration of a virtually untouched abandoned Welsh Slate Mine. First worked in 1836 and abandoned by the miners in the early 1970s, more than 130 years of mining history is captured inside waiting to be discovered. It is as if the mine has just closed. Machinery, tools, even the candles and a packet of cigarettes are still in place as the miners left them. Corris Mine Explorers gives you the opportunity to visit these abandoned slate mine workings, to step into the tough working lives of the miners and of past generations. 3 trips to choose from: 1 hour Taster, 2 hour Mine Explorer Trip and a Half Day Mine Expedition.

We decided to go on the 1 hour taster session which was incredibly interesting despite the awful weather. We phoned on New years day and managed to go on the trip later that afternoon. Mark was very flexible and told us about the different trips and what we could expect on each. He was passionate and answered our questions (although... More

This is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. We selected the 2 hour tour and Mark took us into the mines. He is clearly passionate and enthusiastic and we learnt a lot from him. Wrapping up warm is key!! Highly recommended.

Thanks for your fantastic review. Great advice to wrap up warm - and a few pairs of thick woolly socks is a must! More

Very enjoyable trip, incredibly informative, exactly what my brother and I wanted. Both of us are interested in railways and mining and this trip opened our eyes brilliantly to what it was like and how it was done, 4 hours wasn't enough though, will definitely be back!

Have been visiting Corris for years but never done a mine tour before. Now I've done it I'm asking myself why not!!! The tour was absolutely brilliant and I didn't want it to end! We just went on the taster tour, not knowing what to expect. The guide mark (Moley) was a star. He was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable which... More

What a brilliant review, we're so pleased that you decided, after all these years visiting Corris, to venture underground with Corris Mine Explorers. We look forward to showing you lots more when you return for a longer and more in depth trip next year. More

We went on the two hour trip, and could happily have stayed for more. It was absolutely fascinating to learn about the slate industry, and particularly about the hard lives of the miners, men and boys. There is a Marie Celeste quality to the corners where they stored their bits and pieces - cigarettes, medicine, drinks bottles, clay pipes, tools... More

We love your review, with reference to Marie Celeste-like qualities, a fitting similarity. Great advice to book in advance; this is really essential at this time of year when fewer trips run. Also to wrap up really warm and, if you don't have your own, we can lend you a pair of wellies. Thank you again. More

A great insight into how rock masons! worked and lived in 18-1900s. We learnt a lot of interesting history in an hour and half. Even my 9 yr old was fascinated. Tip- wear good waterproof footwear. Mark the Mole was a fascinating guide and his dog Alfie was very protective of us.

Thank you for your fabulous review, we're so pleased that you both enjoyed it. Next year, when your son is 10, he'll be old enough to do the longer Mine Explorers trip which takes you into different areas of the old Braich Goch mine, with different paraphernalia. Mark also has more time to tell you lots more about the history... More

I usually enjoy industrial archaeology, especially mining, but this one was a cut above the average. It's really hard to appreciate just how wretched conditions were for the miners there. Some interesting contrast with the modern props and roof bolting needed to maintain the structure near King Arthur's labyrinth. We visited several different caverns, and upgraded from a 2 hour... A wonderful review, thank you so much. Really good to read that you were so immersed in the 2 hour trip that you upgraded to the Half Day Expedition (4 hours). The Half Day trip allows for so much more underground exploration and for Mark's incredible knowledge of the mine's history and of miner's stories to be told. Thank you. More
