This isn't a tacky "Dungeons" style tourist attraction but rather a bone fide museum located in a former prison dating back to the 1800's. It's interesting and different and I'd suggest if you're going to visit one tourist attraction in Beaumaris then choose the Gaol over the castle. There are better preserved castles nearby but the next nearest Gaol is... More

Family visit with our 6 year old, we all loved it. The commentary added to the atmosphere and really brought the place to life (suprisingly for 1829 each cell had its own sink and toilet). Chilling in places, especially the condemed prisoner's cell and the nursery for inmates' children to live in. Great to visit somewhere with access to all... More

This is a fascinating place to visit. Really creepy old building and the stories over the headset really add to the mood. Good value and 5 of us that visited all enjoyed it. I don't think it does any but t would be a great place for a ghost tour of some sort too.

This is well worth a visit. Go to the old courtroom first then come to the Gaol a short walk away. You can only imagine what it must have been like if you had been convicted of even a relatively minor misdemeanor in those days.

This is a fascinating place. Well preserved and well presented, follow the history of the building and of some of its inmates. Good audio guide and interesting story boards in the various rooms. Well worth a visit just to understand what prison was like and for what minor crimes men, woman and children were jailed for. Quite chilling to follow... More

The building was interesting but it was a shame that the same three characters stories were repeated again and again. No dogs allowed either (unlike Bodmin Gaol!!)

Numerous cells and rooms to see, with plenty of information to read (distributed on the inside cell walls mainly )about life generally in the 1800's and in the gaol. There is a treadmill which at least 3 prisoners operated (situated in the inner courtyard.). Two very helpful volunteers manned the ticket office/ small shop. I did not use the audio... More

Lovely museum. It really gives you a good feeling of how bad live back in the days was. Interesting stories in the various rooms. It is captivating and keeps you entertained for an hour easily. Hard. Times for often little crimes, wish those times came back!

Well worth a visit but spoilt by the poor internal directions and audio. Pity we still do not have prisons such as this!

Myself and my two children (6 years old) visited mainly because I was interested. But, they loved it too! The audio commentary is a little 'spooky' sounding at times but having the freedom to roam ourselves meant I could read the ample information provided while the children pretended to lock each other up and explore! Excellent fun for all of... More
