Worth the stop when in the area

We both like to visit the historical locations and the unusual museum and so forth in an area. Glad we stopped in here on our way out of Memphis. We are not Elvis people so... read more

We were pretty excited about the idea of a metal art museum but were pretty disappointed with what we found. It took us less than 30 minutes to see the whole thing, which was a bummer since we were looking to pass an afternoon. However if you're REALLY into metal, it'd be worth a stop. The main building held small... More

Really awesome place if you have an interest in blacksmith work. Highly recommended The museum was cool with original works and vintage ornamental gates and art spread out over 2 buildings. An active Foundry was in effect with approx. 8 active blacksmiths hammering away. The apprentice came over introduced himself and answered questions. A pouring was scheduled for 3pm but... More

Tucked away on the south side of the I 55 bridge off exit 12 C is the National Ornamental Metal Museum. Conceived in 1975 and opened in 1979 it is the ONLY institution in the US devoted to the preservation and promotion of metalwork. Sitting on three ish acres of the old Marine hospital overlooking the Mississippi River this is... More

I like small, special interest museums, and this fit the bill perfectly. The first thing you see when you arrive is the huge '10th Anniversary Gate' made out of ornamental metal rosettes, each rosette being made by different artisans from around the world. It was so fascinating that I think I stood there and looked at it for about half... More

It is a very quirky museum but it hosts one of the best views of the Mississippi River. It features a very specific kind of art and even has workshops for artists working with the medium of metal. Definitely worth a visit.

Far more interesting than I was expecting. It's really all about artistic and sculptural architectural metal. Great exhibitions in the temporary exhibition space. And you can see their workshop where there's someone to answer questions about how they make things.

I visited amongst several groups of school children. At first I thought it would be a big hassle, but it proved to be enjoyable. Watching the artists working with metal was outstanding. The gift shop was also great for Christmas gifts.

This museum is a gem off the beaten path in Memphis, but, well worth it. The buildings are beautiful as is the location. The quality and the craftmanship of the artwork is outstanding. The views of the river are compelling. This museum is well worth the trip to find it and the quality of the artwork really sets this museum apart... More

Beautiful grounds overlooking the Mississippi River in a historic estate. The exhibit rooms are spacious. The artists are all over the map in terms of style. I tend to like the modern and unusual. The stuff that makes you think or laugh. Artists from all over the US. I loved it all. The gift shop is very nice. A little... More
