This doughty stronghold, built in the 1200s was twice besieged and captured by the Norse, who, battered down the eastern wall with their axes. A short film tells this remarkable story. « less

From the outside I wasn't sure Rothesay castle had much to offer and wondered if the better view maybe from the road outside which I have walked many times. I was pleasantly suprised when I did decide to take time to enter finding it a very peaceful setting with pleanty of historical information including a short video. The views from... More

I love the numerous castles around Scotland and as a Historic Scotland member you can get in for free and get discounts on things in the gift store/cafes. The person running the ticket booth was really friendly and informative. There are some actual indoor parts to this castle, it's not all just ruins. It's also incredibly easy to get to.... More

A unique, circular castle - right in downtown Rothesay! Beautifully kept up by Historic Scotland - I became a member on the spot! Fascinating history mixing Viking & Scots heritages and great views from the wall-top.

Even as you cross the bridge over the impressive moat, the atmosphere of centuries of warfare and heroics invades your senses and makes you proud to be Scottish! No doubt this magnificent castle is no stranger to being surrounded and defending itself by self sacrifice, and today on 3 sides, history shows understandable evolution, but on the 4th side the... As a local the castle is a centre point of the town, it is a great place for people to go to and inside it is really interesting and nice. Would also recommend the open top bus tour which you can catch at guildford sqaure.

Pretty good ruins, surrounded by a real moat in the centre of town. But must admit we probably wouldn't have paid to go in - as English Heritage members we got in free. Friendly and helpful attendant in a good gift shop - we were in a queue behind Americans spending vast amounts of money!

This was very much a ruin with not too much of the original castle left. When we paid to go in we were given information about the castle - in fact he was very helpful. There was a video to watch to help explain why the castle was situated where it was and some history about it. We found it... More

A little gem this one. despite renovation work being undertaken the castle grunds and story boards are excellent. Grassed areas well kept and guide Billy gave us a welcome and extensive story about the castle and Isle of Bute. Don't miss it.
