The castle was closed for repairs, and we couldn't even walk around it. We parked at the college, and walked down, so we at least got some exercise.

Catriona and I began our visit with coffee and cakes in the restaurant. This is a modern eating place, well designed, clean and friendly with a reasonable choice on the menu. Then we went for a walk around the grounds and this is where the disappointment and confusion began and continued. The guide leaflet had the various colour coded walks... More

An excellent path and beautiful scenery that looks over the port of Stornoway. Good for bikes, walkers. Lovely cafe on grounds.

The exterior looks very nice and castle grounds offer many walking routes (we even spotted some deers) but the castle itself was closed and under some renovations

Nice facility for the locals. Good views from Gallow's Hill. Castle currently closed off and being renovated. New paths being cut around Gallow's Hill. Nice café. Until the current works are complete stick to the path overlooking the harbour.

I guess all scottish towns have to have a castle, especially if they are on a small island. It all looked very tame though and the walk around the castle grounds, while lovely, does not project the true atmosphere of the rest of the island.

Having seen several castles in Scotland I would be very reluctant to give more than only two stars at the moment to this building, which is not open to the public (grounds are though), but that is partly due to the renovation process. Council does a great job, and in future will probably be given 3-4, maybe 5 stars, given... More

Unfortunately Lews Castle was being renovated when we visited sdo we didn't get enough of a view of it to have a good opinion. I'm sure when it is finished it will be charming

On my last visit to the island I included a weekend, and was fortunate enough to have glorious sunny weather. I spent a lovely leisurely afternoon walking around the grounds - although I wasn't quite up to doing the full circuit (about 6 miles). The grounds are lovely, well kept, with great views across the harbour. The college itself is... More

The castle was closed due to refurbishment. Perhaps once it's reopened it will be lovely. All we saw were the grounds (which were less than impressive due to all the university students mucking them up) and the outside was covered up with netting so we couldn't even take photo's. Unfortunate.
