The centre is next door to the 5 locks on the canal. These locks are a must to see when visiting Fort Agustus. There was no boats passing through the locks but still interesting for the visitor. The centre was well organised with friendly helpful staff. Would recommend a visit to the centre and locks. The locks flow into Loch... More

Visited on a beautiful day and popped in the Visitors centre. We then walked around the 5 locks which are truly amazing. They are well kept and a joy to see.

The impressive canal locks are second only to 'Neptune's Staircase' near Fort William and details are given of the planning and the construction phase. The new shop needs more volunteers it seems as it was closed at first due to lack of staff. The shop was well stocked with a somewhat expensive selection of toys and a pricey range of... More

The Caledonian Canal, what a feat of engineering by Thomas Telford. The engineer that helped shape the engineering mind of the genius Brunel. Telford designed and project managed the build of this canal however I am not sure he knew that by making a cutting into the banks of lough Ness and levelling the bottom of the canal to meet... Despite the title that refers to the visitor centre itself, please do visit the canal, it will most certainly get you thinking about what an extraordinary piece of engineering the canal is! It may inspire you to find out more about it, in that case do drop into the visitor centre & buy yourself a book.

But it was CLOSED until April - disappointing - and should it be closed in the Easter holidays. Plus the Open sign must have been there since November.

When you get to Fort Augustus, you can get out of the car and take a lovely walk along the canal and learn about the history. It is a pretty walk and a great view out over the Loch and such.

Fort Augustus is not a bad place to spend a bit of time. The Canal is interesting to see, old locks, it just all looks quaint but nice specially since it's not a museum but still an actual lock system in use.
