Probably overlooked by many visitors to Orkney this cairn is fairly unique as it has both stalls and a chamber plus the added bonus of runes on the lintel of the chamber. Excellent small chambered cairn free to visit and no other tourists. You need to be able to bend very low - hands and knees for me- but it has natural light inside so no need for a torch. A mini Maeshowe just for you! Worth a visit.

This is quite a well-preserved chambered tomb which does not seem to get much publicity and therefore tends not to be as popular as the major attractions on the island. You can get inside but it is necessary to bend very low and therefore is not suitable for people who might find this a problem.

On the entry to the... More

Unlike Maeshowe this chambered cairn is free of charge, unattended by anyone official and off the beaten track. It lies on the banks of Loch Stenness, but it took us some hunting back and forth to locate it. There is a map at http://www.britainexpress.com/scotland/Orkney/Orkney-Neolithic.htm which may make this easier. Unfortunately we did not take a GPS location whilst visiting. It... More
