Description: Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden...
Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden deep in a lost Dorset combe among tumbling hills and unspoiled countryside. Ten acres of gardens descend from the croquet lawn, through the formal topiary down to the wild garden. Mapperton is the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, and welcomes visitors to its Gardens from 1 March to 31 October, to the Cafe from 29 March to 30 September, and to the House from 6 July to 7 August.

Lovely Gardens

Situated in the valley next to the house the gardens were a welcome sun trap away from the otherwise chilly wind. Nicely laid out and great to wander around .

Mapper ton is the garden of a Jacobean Manor House set on a hill. Parts are set out very formally, but the beds are quite relaxed in the way they are planted and it's very attractive

We visited so the children could enjoy the Halloween Trail, which they certainly did! However the Sawmill Cafe (Tel 01308 863348) was closed for the season so we could not try it out. Dogs are not permitted into the gardens. We aren't garden experts but could appreciate the beauty of the setting, although, perhaps given it was late Oct, it did... More

The house, privately owned by Lady Sandwich, looked enchanting but was sadly closed to the public. Open for just a couple of months annually apparently. The bones of the garden, designed in Italian style, were in evidence but everything seemed sadly neglected. The formal ponds choked with weed and scum. The views down the valley were impressive and a terrace... More

My husband and I visited Mapperton Gardens in large part because it was not far from our Dorset hotel and we could squeeze in one last garden visit before departing stateside. The entrance through a low walled driveway opened up to a decent size car park with a small shed gift shop on one side and a cafe and plant... More

We found Mapperton gardens from a leaflet in our hotel when looking for a venue to get married in and we are so glad we did! Mapperton gardens are beautiful all year round and after viewing them in September we felt they would be perfect to host our wedding ceremony! It was a bit of a gamble as most of... More

We arrived at around lunch time and went straight to the café, the food was amazing. Freshly prepared and very tasty and great value for what we had and we planned to go back after our walk around the gardens for cake as they looked really good and the staff were really nice, one word of caution the café is... Very nice gardens, peaceful. There is a really nice cafe, with great homemade cakes. In July and August the house is open during the week, we didn't have time to do that as the tour takes 40 mins.
