Description: Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden...
Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden deep in a lost Dorset combe among tumbling hills and unspoiled countryside. Ten acres of gardens descend from the croquet lawn, through the formal topiary down to the wild garden. Mapperton is the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, and welcomes visitors to its Gardens from 1 March to 31 October, to the Cafe from 29 March to 30 September, and to the House from 6 July to 7 August.

This was a day out for us on our wedding anniversary, although misty it did not stop enjoying this beautiful valley garden. Despite coming across a couple who were obviously planning their wedding with a member of staff who really liked the sound of her own voice as she was very loud and it echoed around the very quiet and... Mapperton is a hidden Dorset gem. Tucked away in a lovely valley the garden is a delight to behold. The Italianate garden is a pleasure to walk round. The weathered garden ornaments, the old swimming pool with the tadpoles swimming around (No Humans allowed) and a large goldfish pool are a delight to see. The gardens are well maintained and... Planting and wildlife stunning. Old swimming pool teeming with tadpoles and newts and much enjoyed by children visiting (as well as adults!). Loved our visit and if we return to Dorset will definitely go again.

Mapperton is one of Dorset's a real hidden treasures. Beautifully situated in a quiet valley, it surprises and delights its enthusiastic visitors with its Italianate gardens and wildlife friendly woods. It's become a firm favourite and much revisited pleasure and the easy parking and lovely cafe make it a great day out.

I am amazed at the very poor review given by Chris W. The gardens were most beautifully maintained and very easy to find one's way around as they lie in a beautiful sheltered valley and the layout can be seen from above. The house can be visited by appointment and its historic connections make a visit well worth the trouble... More

We visited Mapperton House and gardens as a large group (32 persons). We had a really warm welcome from Anthea and the staff before we spent a pleasant few hours exploring the gardens which were delightful (it helped that the weather was glorious) followed by a guided tour of the house. Many thanks to Christine (Tour Guide) who was very... More

Mapperton on a beautiful afternoon in June is my idea of heaven on earth. This is a very special place to me and I have been visiting for more than 20 years. It never fails to inspire and the garden seems to be at its very best this year. The planting is a wonderful and very clever combination of English... More

The house and gardens are literally one of the surprising features of the Dorset countryside. Its no wonder that the house itself was used by the makers of the latest film version of Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Maddening Crowd. Nestling in a wonderful rural valley the gardens are simply magnificent, at the same time both ornamental and majestic. Extremely... More

There is a place I love in Dorset, one that Pevsner describes as enchanting. It's Mapperton House and Gardens, the loveliest, most delicious place in the world, where the ancient, rolling countryside tumbles down to meet the golden stone wall formality of the Italianate garden. It's heaven on earth, the best little manor house in Dorset in the most beautiful... More

Having seen the film Far from the madding crowd which was filmed here we thought it worth a visit. Unfortunately the brochure is incorrect and did not say that the house is only open at very limited times but we decided to visit the gardens as we were there. There was no route map and no guidance signs for a... More
