Description: Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden...
Mapperton is a glorious sandstone manor house and romantic valley garden deep in a lost Dorset combe among tumbling hills and unspoiled countryside. Fifteen acres of gardens descend from the croquet lawn, through the formal topiary down to the wild garden. Mapperton is the home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, and welcomes visitors to its Gardens from 1 March to 31 October, to the Cafe from 29 March to 30 September, and to the House from 6 July to 7 August.

Spent an afternoon at Mapperton. We walked there and arrived at lunch time and had a brief cup of tea and a quick soup in the cafe. The staff were friendly and helpful and had no issue with us walking in to the cafe with our muddy boots. The gardens were a treat, beautifully laid out across a number of... More

Don’t bring your sandwiches here It’s certainly no picnic visiting Lord Sandwich’s stately pile at Mapperton. His ancestor may have liked to bring his own grub, but don’t you try it. No picnic places and if you try to eat at the outdoor café, having bought a drink a lady comes out and shouts at you “get out, leave now,... More

I am, needless to say, a very old friend who has been visiting Mapperton EVERY year religiously! So, what more can I say? I LOVE BEING HERE., with my close friends & their hospitality, love & generosity. Not to mention this beautiful tranquil escape for me from the prosaic, humdrum life in India.!! Yes, I come all the way from... More

We drove from Swanage to Mapperton in 40 minutes. We booked our house tour and then had a lovely lunch. We then had a lovely stroll around the gardens before the house tour. The tour took about 40 minutes and felt rushed. The guides need to talk more slowly and be more select about what they choose to talk about.

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon visiting both the attractive formal gardens set in an idyllic valley and the interesting house. However if you wish to visit the house consider ringing up and booking your spot. We arrived at 13.45, first tour due at 14.00 to initially be told that the first tour available was at 15.45 clearly several people had rung... More

We visited Mapperton in July because we wanted to see the house as well as the gardens and arrived just after 11 am to find out that the first tour of the house was not until 2.15 pm. We were told that the gardens and tea rooms were open but 3 hours is a long time to walk around so... More

A trip back in time to a lovely house and gardens. Recently used to film "Far From The Madding Crowd". Home of the Earl of Sandwich. Steep steps in the garden so need to be mobile. Excellent restaurant in the Barn for lunch. £6 entry for gardens and £6 for house ( need to book timed tour). Key for chapel... More

The Italian gardens were very interesting, we found the swimming pool full of newts notices around the pool not suitable for swimming. We were told they employ one full time gardener and two part time, this was quite evident as things were not being kept on top of. The house was a slight disappointment we were shown four rooms still... More

We visited on a wet day, so we didn't see the gardens at their best, but we could tell they were very pretty. We'd recently seen the 'Far from the Madding Crowd' movie so we were pleasantly surprised to discover a number of scenes had been filmed here. We had a nice lunch in the cafe under a very impressive... More
