In its heyday this would have been a very impressive building. Today a few of the curtain walls remain but enough to give you an idea of how it would have been in the past.
One of the best guided tours I have ever been on, I think the ladies name was Jazz (short for Jacintha - not sure) a mature lady who is so interesting and entertaining and really loves her job
I found the castle of ferns was interesting to me as my ancestors landed there in the townland of Ferns before the 12th century. Their names were many but they got the name from the locals as the Flemings. Many of the french names were hard to pronounce as i was told by the locals , so people called them...

We came across Ferns Castle on accident. We were driving the scenic route back to Dublin and something about the ruins on the hill made me drive by. When I got to the castle there was free parking right in front of the visitors center. My mother and I got out and looked around a bit. There was a school...

When I first approached Ferns castle, i looked at the ruins and was not expecting much, certainly there are bigger better castles around Ireland to be impressed by. However, on entry to the visitors centre, I was really pleasantly surprised. There is a great background to the castle, a fantastic history lesson on ireland to be learned, and without a...

We all really enjoyed our visit to ferns castle. We were made to feel like VIPs even though we were probably a guides worst nightmare in a castle with steep narrow steps - mum carrying a baby, a preschooler, an overly interested primary schooler and an OAP.
Our guide Christine was excellent, real history to interest all ages and nice...

While travelling from Rosslare to Gorey, passed a sign for Ferns heritage centre. Was dragged by husband to take a look. We arrived at the ruins and I thought thats it - ruins. But was dragged into the heritage centre by the same man, and was so glad we did. One tower of the castle - 800years old has been...

Ferns Castle is an attraction for all the family. Guides alter the tour according to the ages and interests of the groups and entertain young and old alike. The tour is informative and gives you the stories of the people who lived in the castle not just the historical facts. An added bonus is that it is free of charge.
Fantastic piece of history. The king of Leinster Dairmait Macmurragh, Strongbow, Aoife, Cromwell, and many more all had their fascinating stories retold here free of charge by very enthusiastic tour guides. The tower is deceptive you may think the ruins from the outset are little to see but once they open the door to the castle and you begin to...
