Owner description: Raccoon Mountain Caverns is located just 1.3 miles off of I-24 at the Lookout Valley exit (#174), and is less than ten minutes from downtown Chattanooga. Visitors are presented with a cave in its natural state and our 45-minute (+/-) Crystal Palace Walking Tour allows them to view thousands of diverse formations - stalagtites, stalagmites, delicate soda straws, flowstone, rimstone pools, draperies, columns, natural bridges, and a rare shield formation. We also offer a variety of wild cave "spelunking" expeditions for those who want to view beyond the lighted pathways and explore deeper into the mountain. Our Waterfall Dome expedition permits visitors to view the areas tallest underground, natural (unassisted) flowing waterfall.

We took the 4 hour caving tour. This is not for the faint of heart or out of shape. After the first 5 minutes, you leave the nice gravel paths and start climbing, crawling and sliding through the mud. This was an amazingly fun activity. You really get the caving experience. The 49 cent squeeze was something else - you... More

Thanks for your visit and for taking the time to post your comments. I spoke with Josh and thanked him for yet another job well done. Josh, like all the guides, are great at assessing how each member of the group is progressing and help them as necessary while continuously providing encouragement where needed. I am glad that you and... More

Our group consisted of six folks, ages 5 through 62. We took the 2-hour Eco Classic tour. The cave itself provided the adventure, and tour guide Payton was patient, informative, and popular with our children. From our 5yo son: He was nice. From our 8yo son: He was nice and athletic. He kept us safe and waited for us. From... More

the tour was very neat and informative. If you don't mind getting a little dirty then it is def something to checkout while in Chattanooga.

Thank you very much for your recent visit to our cave. Our wild cave tours can indeed be a bit dirty and it really depends upon how much rain that we have had recently. The summer and fall are perhaps the driest times of the year while the winter and spring can be much wetter. I hope that you enjoyed... More

My family toured the caverns and had an excellent experience. Our guide was informative and we learned a lot on the 45 min tour. Afterward we went up the road to visit the Raccoon Mountain Pumped-Storage Station. Great views from the top of the mountain!

Thank you very much for taking time out of your schedule to visit our cave during your visit to the Chattanooga area. I am certainly glad that you enjoyed your tour and I thoroughly agree that we are an "out of the way gem." I also agree that the views from the top of Raccoon Mountain at the TVA facility... More

The caves were fascinating. One of our boys became ill about half way through the tour and Chris was patient and very helpful. We greatly appreciated him, and the rest of us still enjoyed the trip. Recommended.

Thank you very much for caving with us and I am glad that you enjoyed your tour. Our guides are trained to handle situations such as the one that you described. Our wild cave expeditions go way past the lighted pathways of the Crystal Palace walking tour and explore the inner portions of our cave system. Thanks again for visiting... More

Colby, the tour guide, made sure the group felt safe, comfortable, and excited about exploring the Raccoon Mountain Caverns. He did so, effortlessly, being informative and enthusiastic while continuously encouraging the group to help each other out. This could have been just another guided tour but instead was more like a group of friends hanging out and exploring a cavern.... More

Thank for very much for visiting our cave and it sounds as though you thoroughly enjoyed your tour. I will be sure to let Colby know that you had a great time. The cave actually experiences seasonal changes that mirror what is happening above ground. The result of rain every few days coupled with the cooler temperatures means that more... More

Other than the absence of the waterfall this is a much better cavern tour than ruby falls. Our guide Kylend was young but very knowledgable and was able to answer all our questions, a very nice young man and he didn't rush us through and gave us time to look around and enjoy the scenery which is what we came... In an outdoors capacity, this is one of the coolest things I have done in Chattanooga. The caves are amazing. Our guide (Corey) has made it an even better experience. Every time we go we request Corey to be our guide. He knows the caves well. He is very personable and fun. I recommend him. Jake Thomas

Our guide was very sweet but talked so fast and in a very robotic voice. Needed to sound more natural. She was very educational and safe conscientious. We took the shortest tour, which was fine because all you see is the same stuff. Don't wear good shoes or anything you will slip in. It is slippery, wet and graveled. It... More

Thank you very much for visiting our cave and I am obviously disappointed that you did not thoroughly enjoy your tour. I was able to determine who guided your tour and discussed your concerns. She apologized if she came across as talking fast and indicated that happens when she gets excited. The cave is always a near constant sixty-degrees because... More

My wife and I went on the extended eco tour, the experience was great. To stop here was not an original plan in our travels but thought we would take a chance. We wish... More
