The Black hills region of South Dakota takes a backseat to nowhere on the continent as far as sheer beauty goes. As a matter of fact, we do not know of a place with more attractions packed into a small area than this. ( Ok, except Disney World, LOL ) One of our perennial favorites here is Spearfish Canyon. The... More

I visited Wikiup Cabins as a child and couldn't wait to take my family there. The hosts were very hospitable and accommodating. It was so refreshing to come back to a place that was serene and peaceful following a visit to the commercialized mecca of Mt. Rushmore, Keystone, Hill City, etc. The cabins are rustic, but who doesn't love that??... More

We did enjoy our drive through Spearfish, however, after taking in much of the other South Dakota scenery, this wasn't as high on my list. If you have time, I would still recommend visiting, but I would not put it over the badlands, Rushmore or Custer Park. The waterfalls are pretty, but it was crowded with everyone trying to take... This was one of the highlights of our trip. We packed a picnic lunch and ate at one of the large picnic tables tucked back behind some trees. Several Black-headed Grosbeak birds visited our table. We walked to Roughlock Falls and down the trail a bit. Driving on down the road, we had to watch for the signs for Bridal... More

Highly recommended - trek to Devils Bathtub (turn off at Cleopatra Place, half hour hike on unmarked trail), Roughlock Falls (widely considered one of the most beautiful locations in the Black Hills and where cinematographers for the motion picture "Dances with Wolves" decided to shoot its final scenes), Bridal Veil Falls, Spearfish Canyon Lodge for dinner, Cheyenne Crossing store for... Stop and take the hike down into the woods in this area. It is about a mile walk, some a little steep, and is a nice break from the city. The waterfall is about halfway through the area and the mist rolls over you from the water pool and cools you off. Very nice!!

I recommend hiking the 76 trail. Its step but only 1.5 miles round trip. I wore tennis shoes but recommend hiking boots if you have them. Beautiful view from the top.

19 miles @ 35 miles per hour. A great way to slow down and smell the roses, uhhh wildflowers, see the water falls, mountainsides and rocks. Plenty of pullouts and room to visit the falls. Great for picture taking. Easy access to the sites and plenty of hiking trails to the falls if you are energetic. We will return to... More

Do not miss the opportunity to drive this canyon. This place is more stunning and awe inspiring than the Grand Canyon. Additionally, make the effort to go see Roughlock falls. Exquisite
