Don't drive by on your trip down I-90 - take the time to at least drive through if not stop and explore. It is an easy drive and beautiful. There is a beautiful lodge and restaurant.

Compared to the wildlife and scenery at custer state park this drive is a bit of a disappointment. nice waterfalls but nothing you can't see elsewhere. high mountains were interesting. but it takes 2 hours each way from Custer.

The posted speed limit on Spearfish Canyon Scenic Road is 35 - but expect to go slower. And watch for sightseers going slow or pedestrians running across the road to get a better view. Definitely make the side trip to Roughlock Falls. Nice easy walking to see awesome views. Bridal Veil Falls are the most famous, but not nearly as... More

Our second trip. Once on motorcycles during Rally week and this time in an RV. No crowds so it was really nice. Also drove up Vanocker Canyon and Ice Box Canyon. The scenery is just gorgeous

Spearfish Canyon is an amazing place. It's best to avoid the crowds and go the week after the rally. Same great weather and views, but less traffic to worry about.

We traveled through here in a motor-coach on a tour that included visits to Mt Rushmore, Devil's Tower, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Roosevelt NP, etc. Upon completion of the tour, several passengers claimed that the Spearfish Canyon was the nicest scenery of all. One highlight along the way that I highly recommend was a stop at Spearfish Canyon Lodge. From there,... More

The Black hills region of South Dakota takes a backseat to nowhere on the continent as far as sheer beauty goes. As a matter of fact, we do not know of a place with more attractions packed into a small area than this. ( Ok, except Disney World, LOL ) One of our perennial favorites here is Spearfish Canyon. The... More

I visited Wikiup Cabins as a child and couldn't wait to take my family there. The hosts were very hospitable and accommodating. It was so refreshing to come back to a place that was serene and peaceful following a visit to the commercialized mecca of Mt. Rushmore, Keystone, Hill City, etc. The cabins are rustic, but who doesn't love that??... More

We did enjoy our drive through Spearfish, however, after taking in much of the other South Dakota scenery, this wasn't as high on my list. If you have time, I would still recommend visiting, but I would not put it over the badlands, Rushmore or Custer Park. The waterfalls are pretty, but it was crowded with everyone trying to take... This was one of the highlights of our trip. We packed a picnic lunch and ate at one of the large picnic tables tucked back behind some trees. Several Black-headed Grosbeak birds visited our table. We walked to Roughlock Falls and down the trail a bit. Driving on down the road, we had to watch for the signs for Bridal... More
