I'm so proud that my father served on the USS South Dakota during World War II, and this museum and memorial are a tribute to him and to all of the other brave men who served aboard her. We had a wonderful tour of the museum by Opal, who was very knowledgeable about the history of this ship. It made... More

Walk the outline of the ship and see the items taken off before it was scrapped after WW II. Watch the 30-min. video inside. Free and interesting.

OK, what is a battleship - sort of - doing in a park in the middle of Sioux Falls? The good folks of South Dakota had a problem when the USS South Dakota went out of service. They wanted to have it in their state, but there was no obvious place to put it. So ... they took some parts... More

It was nice to see this place. We had read about it in the visitors guide and it was very close to the hotel we stayed at, within walking distance.

One of the most decorated battleships of WWII, the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial is a great tribute to those who fought so bravely to protect our freedoms. The memorial is laid out in a manner that gives you a feel of the size of the ship. Along the grounds are various markers for the battles in which the USS... More

My son and I went the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial earlier today and really enjoyed it. I teach social studies and my late father served in WWII, so that time period is of great interest to me. My son, also an avid historian of WWII at the age of 12, asked to visit this memorial and he was lucky... More

If you are a history buff it would be a great place to visit. Volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable. Price is free so it is recommended. Wouldn't pay to much to see it.

This exhibit is absolutely free, and is something like a city park with a battleship sunk into it. There are really only a few bits and pieces of the ship: barrel of a 16" gun, barrels of a smaller deak gun, the mast, a reinforced hatch door, propellor, part of the wooden decking, radar, and i think an anchor. The... More

People do not realize that after the battle of midway the Japanese Navy was way more powerful than ours, and at Santa Cruz the Enterprise probably would not have survived without the South Dakota by her side, and South Dakota went to the Battle of Guadalcanal with damage from a bomb hit at Santa Cruz. The ship fought throughout the... More
