Not your typical museum structure, this one is built into the side of hill, and much of it is underground. A contemporary version of a traditional Native American dwelling, this beautiful building features Native American (mostly the Sioux tribes) and pioneer exhibits, with many rare artifacts tracing the history of South Dakota.

I've been to the SD Cultural Center numerous times, but I'd go again if I were in Pierre tomorrow. It's a wonderful place, and South Dakota has a history worth telling, time and time again. It's many Native people contribute greatly to its heritage and story; the entire first section is worth savoring for the richness of its artifacts. I... More

Terrific museum, covering plains Indians, settler and the economic influences that have all shaped the state. The displays are great and arranged in a sensible way. Especially enjoyed the section on baseball in the state.

The cultural center sits high on a hill and seems to disappear into it. Inside, the museum tells the story of the development of South Dakota from prehistory to the present. The layout was easy to follow, and there was an observation room on the second level. My favorite exhibits were those pertaining to the indians' way of life.

Built in the side of a bluff, the Center is a historic preservation of South Dakota History and Heritage. It follows South Dakota from the past to the present with artifacts from Native tribes and settlers. Thousands of artifacts to see. From clothing, hunting rifles, farm machinery and sports, an excellent museum. The gift shop has quality gifts available for... More

This museum was definitely the highlight of our trip to the area. The exhibits were wonderful: I went from zero knowledge about South Dakota to having a real understanding of its unique and fascinating history. I particularly appreciated the care with which many of the sensitive - and occasionally difficult - aspects of our country's past were treated. My only... More

Each of the three sections of the museum do a wonderful job of telling the history of: the native Americans, early settlers and more current events in the state. With many hands-on exhibits visitors can enter a teepee, ride a railroad, steer a steamship or milk a cow-kids love it! The two changing exhibits, one upstairs with a terrific view... More

This was a great way to learn about South Dakota's history. You could move through quickly or linger over various exhibits. There are enough inactive things to keep younger kids occupied for a little while as well.
