Well laid out and lots of interesting information. Not being from the area, we learned lots of early South Dakota history. We had a little trouble finding this, but that might have been the fault of our GPS.

The place is not huge, but it is well stocked with many historical items on SD. It is worth the stop and filled in a rainy afternoon. The view from the observation deck is great. There are exhibits for young to old.

State-of-the art series of galleries tracing the history of South Dakota from the Native Americans into the 21st century. Lots of hands-on exhibits, videos, staged re-creations. Highlights -- an ancient Prayer Rock, the Verendrye Plate (buried in SD circa 1742 by French explorers, believed to be the first Europeans to cross the Great Plains), the Deadwood Stagecoach, the Sioux Horse... Great description of the history of the Dakotas from ancient peoples, through the plains Indians, to the settlement by Europeans. There was a good description of the geology and formation of the Dakota region at the cultural center. It explains the landscape we've seen to date and what we should see as we move into the Western regions of South... More

This place will not disappoint. I am a South Dakotan that's traveled a bit and I visit 2x a year on account of the fact that it's that good. Crowds are small, the artifacts are well documented and displayed, the layout is brilliant and the gift shop is full of unique area items (and the barest of tchotchke). It's a... More

Our family of 6, all kids under 10, visited. I never have been to Pierre much less this exhibit. I wish we would have had more time to soak it all in. The exhibit moves on a time-line basis from the beginning with American Indians to the modern. It even includes a cow-milking attraction that is sort of a game,... More

Nice mixture of past to present art and artifacts. The sod house and tale of white buffalo woman was especially interesting.
