Not your typical museum structure, this one is built into the side of hill, and much of it is underground. A contemporary version of a traditional Native American dwelling, this beautiful building features Native American (mostly the Sioux tribes) and pioneer exhibits, with many rare artifacts tracing the history of South Dakota.

This museum was definitely the highlight of our trip to the area. The exhibits were wonderful: I went from zero knowledge about South Dakota to having a real understanding of its unique and fascinating history. I particularly appreciated the care with which many of the sensitive - and occasionally difficult - aspects of our country's past were treated. My only... More

Visiting this museum was a pleasure on many different levels. One thing that impressed me immediately was that the exhibits were geared to all age groups and that children as well as adults would be fascinated by them. For the children there were many interactive activities and for the adults information was readily available for those who wanted more information... More

Each of the three sections of the museum do a wonderful job of telling the history of: the native Americans, early settlers and more current events in the state. With many hands-on exhibits visitors can enter a teepee, ride a railroad, steer a steamship or milk a cow-kids love it! The two changing exhibits, one upstairs with a terrific view... More

This was a great way to learn about South Dakota's history. You could move through quickly or linger over various exhibits. There are enough inactive things to keep younger kids occupied for a little while as well.

My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the Cultural Heritage Center. The quality of the exhibits and the knowledgeable staff easily compare to visiting the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC. We truly learned about the people that settled the area and the Indian history. Definitely a must see if you are in Pierre! http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g54760-d277928-r211131371-South_Dakota_Discovery_Center-Pierre_South_Dakota.html#

The Center's exhibit tracks history from prehistoric times, and does a very good job of it. The exhibits of Native American memorabilia and battles, buffalo, early white settlers, sod houses, gold mining, the iron horse, all are very well presented. If you're in Pierre, you really should set aside a couple of hours for this attraction. It will be well... More

This museum is outstanding! It's collection of Plains Indian artifacts is not to be missed. I think it is of equal quality with the Smithsonian and Field Museum exhibits. Also of great interest are the exhibits on early pioneer life. There is a soddy replica. This museum is also very kid-friendly and the staff is very friendly and helpful. I... More
