Not your typical museum structure, this one is built into the side of hill, and much of it is underground. A contemporary version of a traditional Native American dwelling, this beautiful building features Native American (mostly the Sioux tribes) and pioneer exhibits, with many rare artifacts tracing the history of South Dakota.

I'm sure the place is great from all the other ratings but I showed up before they opened and didn't have the ability to stick around as a blizzard was forcecast for area and I needed to get south. Maybe next time. No fault of theirs

Recently visited Pierre for a sporting event. Our first time traveling over the Missouri River. We LOvED this museum. Very informative. I have spent more than a normal amount of time within Deadwood History's Museums and I must admit this museum reminded me much of The Days of 76. I found the Lewis and Clark info fascinating. Due to being two days after Christmas, and 5 minutes after they opened, we were the only ones there. The two ladies were most accommodating. The exhibits were phenomenal and it's very cost friendly. Loved it and will go back in a heartbeat when in the area again.

We spent a lovely afternoon in here. As its built into the side of a bluff, it was nice and cool, in contrast to the heat outside. Fascinating display of native American and settlers artifacts right up to recent times. Excellent gift shop too.

Well laid out and lots of interesting information. Not being from the area, we learned lots of early South Dakota history. We had a little trouble finding this, but that might have been the fault of our GPS.

The place is not huge, but it is well stocked with many historical items on SD. It is worth the stop and filled in a rainy afternoon. The view from the observation deck is great. There are exhibits for young to old.

State-of-the art series of galleries tracing the history of South Dakota from the Native Americans into the 21st century. Lots of hands-on exhibits, videos, staged re-creations. Highlights -- an ancient Prayer Rock, the Verendrye Plate (buried in SD circa 1742 by French explorers, believed to be the first Europeans to cross the Great Plains), the Deadwood Stagecoach, the Sioux Horse...
