My family and I were on a 7,000 mile road trip this time last year. I've been reminiscing about Deadwood while looking at the photos I took. This is a little town with so much history. Try to talk to the long time locals who really know the history of the town. Remember that the town was several feet lower... More

Deadwood is a quaint little town in SD. Most of the buildings are still from the gold mining times. The main street looks like you are stepping back into time with the old style signs advertising the businesses.

Every time we go to Deadwood I try to walk down main street and visit some of the old stores, restaurants , and Casinos. To see some of the many things that are being sold or displayed in the old buildings is really neat. Who knows you may just see a gunfight, or you may see Calamity Jane or even... More

Deadwood tries hard to portray its old Western heritage. The new bars and casinos dress up like old ones but there is no doubtof their true age. This is now totally a tourist town with staged gunfights and actors in the streets at times. The restored buildings make convincing backdrops. Parking is for pay, mostly at 1 central parking garage,... More

Your first stop in Deadwood should be the visitor's center in the old train station. They'll have a newspaper listing the time of all reenactments each day. Most are free and fun. The architecture is amazing--much of it is original from the late 1800s and very early 1900s--but Deadwood doesn't yet have a guide telling you what each building originally... More

Really cool old west downtown area. Shoot outs in the street 3 or 4 times a day. Plenty of eateries and saloons.

When visiting Deadwood and you are into classic cars, music, dancing in the street, gambling, eating, and just basic partying, the time to visit is August, for the annual "Cool Deadwood Nights." This is an event that draws thousands of people from all around the globe. When we left, people were booking their hotel rooms for next years event. How... More

Fairly quiet the Sunday we were there. Since it was Sunday, didn't get to see the reenactments. Enjoyed walking around and reading the history. Took the underground tour to learn about the Chinese culture while the railroad was being built. It was informative and a neat way to spend a half hour. Had a nice lunch on the rooftop of... More

I hoped to find an Old West atmosphere with nice shops with western art or even a saddlery and/or western gear store of some kind, but we found nothing but silly cheap souvenirs. Looks to me more like a Disneyland for bikers.
