Great historic town to walk around, read the signs and souvenir shop. A bit far from Mt Rushmore if that is your main interest.

There is no history here to speak of! They say the entire downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places, but if true, this treasure has been squandered. We found a small Visitors Center, a walking tour of places that were either very difficult to find or no longer in existence, a downtown full of buildings that may... More

We enjoyed the buildings and history in Deadwood, walking where other historical people had walked. Despite the reviews of others, if you go, remember that Deadwood was originally a gambling / gold mining mecca. The gold isn't here anymore but the gambling is so you do have slots, table games, etc. almost everywhere. It isn't really a family atmosphere so... More

It was interesting to walk through a street where such colourful characters once walked. I was expecting it to be more historical and not so many casinos but I enjoyed it just the same.

I wasn't too keen on going to SoDak but it was one of the best trips of my life. Deadwood was so much fun. The gaming, history and bar scene were great.

My family and I spent one night in Deadwood. We really enjoyed our day. We visited the Mount Moriah cemetery. We enjoyed a nice walk and visited several graves including Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. Our favorite part of the visit was the live action reenactments. The actors did a great job. Due to floods and two fires the town... More

Writing this in the hope that Deadwood Chamber of Commerce/Tourism department takes it on board. Currently, some barely-heard street theatrics, gambling and gift stores. Advice: 1. Close most of main street to cars (at least during main visitor hours). 2. Have horse drawn Carriage rides... Where WAS the Deadwood stage...huge missed opportunity! 3. Have 'visitor center' stores and scenes where... More

We expected a real Wild West experience and were badly disappointed. The only industry seems to be the casinos. We were not interested in gambling and the town has nothing else. The buildings are not authentic. The tour of the cemetery is well-advertised but you can experience it by reading the detailed description of it which explains the different people... More

Do yourself a favor and start your visit to Historic Deadwood with a stop by the History and Information Center (located in the old railway station). The helpful folks on duty will provide an orientation map and recommend things to do. Given our time constraints, we decided to grab the walking tour brochure, which is a self-guided "Trail to Deadwood's... More

We spent around four hours taking in the shoot out reenactments and the businesses. We really didn't find it to be that great. My pre-teen son thought it was pretty "lame." My husband and I agreed. Unless you are into gambling, I'm not sure it's really worth your time to go.
