My second trip to Deadwood. Although it's not the original town as depicted in the movies it is still a very interesting place. No trip to South Dakota can be complete without a visit to Deadwood. A bucket list entry for sure.

Somehow I expected that this would be more "old west" but really it was just a neat little tourist town with some older buildings. We got there early in the am when everything opened, and realized that it would have been more fun, I'm assuming, to go at night perhaps when all the bars were open. The town really seems... More

The town of Deadwood is historic, and also a tourist attraction, from sturgis to wild bill. A lot of casinos, the food is great and the people are friendly, nice place to visit and learn about history.

Deadwood seems to send a mixed message. The historic spots aren't all "open"....the mannequins in the brothel windows are dusty and tired looking. The town could certainly do more with the spots where historical events happened. We took the Kevin Costner bus tour which gave a good overview of the town but did not go up to the Mount Moriah... Downtown Deadwood is done so right, you'll think you're on a movie set. Wild West architecture from the 19th century has been lovingly preserved and restored, and the character of the whole place is just right. Find on-street parking, if available, or hunt down the parking garage a block off of Main Street (near the middle) and check out Deadwood.... More

So maybe we are the dumbest tourists on the planet. While traveling through the Black Hills area, we kept see advertising for "Historic Deadwood" and decided to travel through here, even making hotel reservations. We love old towns and historic architecture. NO WHERE did we get a hint that this is CASINO HEAVEN and GAMBLING MECCA. Upon arriving in Deadwood,... More

Deadwood has done a wonderful job at keeping their city very authentic to its past. Few buildings aren't in keeping with the period we think about when Deadwood comes to mind. The businesses are friendly and welcoming, the bars are comfortable, and the restaurants are decent-to-excellent. The live reinactments make the town fun like a theme park. Highly recommend this... Great place to visit. Full of shops and casinos. The best part is walking down main street remembering how this town was in the 1800s. It is more commercialized now which is ok. We ate at the Silverado and had the seafood buffet. Very good. We visited Wild Bill Hickok's grave at the top of the hill. Very close to... More

Historic Deadwood is a fun place to visit. There are plenty of tourist traps but it doesn't seem to exist solely for that reason. You can almost see Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane in your minds eye as you walk this small town. Some of the old building now contain casinos which will appeal to some and not to... More
