I watched the tv show as a child many years ago and was not a big fan but I was curious to see what the Homestead offered. I was pleasantly surprised that it was so interesting and that there was so much to see and do there. After touring the home, school and other buildings, we took the horse drawn... More

Our stop in DeSmet was one of the highlights of our cross country adventure this summer. We camped on the edge of the prairie in our pop up trailer after finding the RV sites and covered wagons to be full. Our kids spent the day talking about Laura and Mary, throwing horseshoes, playing with kittens and romping after gophers. We... More

This is a must for families with school age children. They do not need to be Laura Ingalls Wilder fans to enjoy this stop. The Homestead gives them an opportunity to experience what life was like on the open prairie during the 1880s. The site is staffed by knowledgeable friendly docents who provide the children with many hands on activities.... More

This is the best one of all the towns she lived in. So many things to see & read about. Very interesting out buildings with hands on activities. Very informative. Especially if you were or are a Little House on the Priaire fan.

My husband, teenager, and I spent an afternoon at LIW Homestead. The homestead has been kept up very nicely and the exhibits are well documented. The different sites around the Homestead have hands-on activities with a knowledgeable host at each one. The horse-drawn wagon ride to the country school (not far) was a pleasant surprise. Recommend.

My kids loved this attraction. They really cater towards kids and had so many hands on activities and places to run and just be a kid. The staff was friendly and we could have spent much more time here. Wish I would have known about the covered wagon accommodations and would have stayed here versus in town. Maybe a good... More

We spent five hours at the homestead, and loved every minute of it. Being fans of the LIW books, it meant a lot to us to see where many of her great stories took place. Well worth the price of admission -- there was so much to see and do, and the interpreter staff really brought the experiences alive with... More

I loved this place! You could do everything hands on. You were welcome to touch and climb and pet and work and try it all. The organ, the sewing machine, the washer/ringer, the mower, the wagons. You were welcome to check it all out. The kids got to drive the horse team, they got to ride the mini ponies. And... More

My daughter (25) and I made this a destination of our summer vacation and even though it was raining and cold while we were there, we really, really enjoyed it. We read the books set in De Smet in the car as we made our way there, so everything was fresh in our minds. The staff was very knowledgeable, and... More

This place is amazing! It was myself and my sister, two fans of Little House. Even as adults we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff here is so great. We learned so much, and had so much fun. There are locals and experts on sight, it is so amazing. We stayed on the homestead in a covered wagon. It was small,... More
