The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is part of our national park system. It's about a 20 minute drive from Savannah, across the high bridge into South Carolina. The new visitor center is excellent. Visitors should watch the short film first. It explains the area wildlife, history and the way the Savannah River plays a key role. Then roam around the... More

We visited here on a Saturday hoping to see some alligators in the wild and were not disappointed. The drive is one-way, and there are several locations along the 4 mile route where the gators tend to be most easily viewable. There is about a ten -15 foot drop down into the canals so you feel a little safe getting... More

Savannah NWR is a very nice wildlife refuge with a 4-mile scenic wildlife drive (the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive). My wife and I visited in May and went out one morning to photograph birds during the nesting season. We arrived at the refuge around 8:30 and spent the next three hours driving around and enjoying the wildlife. While we didn't... More

The day was hot and humid.....so touring a nature preserve in the air conditioned car was a no brainer. We managed to see a number of alligators and a small owl. Our visit was time limited and I'm sure there was a lot more to see. You can also bike or walk the trails.

Four mile loop - at roughly 10 miles or less and hour. Went on a Saturday morning around 1030 and there must have been 50 - 80 others out in on the path (either biking or cars). So - you need to have the time and patience. If you are heading to the airport (like me) allow plenty of time.... More

On our way to Hilton Head, we drove the four-mile loop and were pleasantly surprised by the beauty and the wildlife. On our way back home, we stopped in at the Visitor's Center. The introductory film was very informative as were the displays. We also enjoyed the short nature hike behind the visitor's center.

I've always loved alligators and as long as you go at the right time of year (early Spring is best) you'll definitely see them, lots of them. Plus, it's great to actually bicycle around the refuge to see what other nature you might find from all sorts of birds to raccoons, to bobcats, turtles. I go here as often as... More

The 4-mile loop road allows visitors to see a wide variety of birds in the marsh. There are also alligators, trees draped in Spanish moss and a beautiful magnolia tree gracing the entrance. There is a comfort station at Mile 1.

This was the surprise of our trip if I am being completely honest. I wanted to go there but since it’s a little ways out we didn’t. Then as we were leaving and driving up the backroads to Charleston we saw it and decided to take a 15 minute detour. That turned into a 1 ½ hour drive through the... More

This place is relaxing and very scenic. If you have never seen an alligator you should definitely go here because you will see them here. The drive around it is nice and only 4 mile long. Not far from Savannah which is a big plus.
