Maybe I am not being fair, because we were tired and missed the turnoff to the visitor center. It was interesting once we found it. (Address does not show up in GPS) We tried to go the Laurel Hill loop, but changed our minds. It is dirt with gravel, at least the part we tried to enter. I did not... More

This is a hidden gem. We just happened to find it and were so glad we did. There is a nice museum and then a beautiful 4 mile ride through the refuge. You can pull over to take photos or hike one of the trails. And it is all free!

Laurel hill wildlife drive is an excellent loop to drive to see birds and other wildlife. There are many opportunities to stop the car with a camera or binoculars. Plenty of alligators, ibis, egrets, wood storks, gallinules, as well song birds and hawks. There is also a port-I-john which isn't too disgusting. In the winter there are many ducks. I... More

We stumbled across the Wildlife Refuge online and saw that there was a 4 mile drive that is open on Sundays even when the rest of the refuge isn't open. It is a little confusing to get to if you end up at the entrance of the refuge but we eventually found our way to the trail. Make sure you... More

Wow what a fantastic place to visit. We stopped here to eat our breakfast sandwiches and then use the facilities. While walking around the visitor center I found a pamphlet for a 4 mile drive through the old rice plantation and canals to see wildlife. I have never seen so many alligators in my life in the wild. This was... More

Well worth the visit. It's so beautiful and the gators are plentiful. We took the short Racoon Island hike and saw a big guy sunning on the bank as we went by. Highly recommend you to visit if you enjoy nature and would like to see wild alligators.

My daughters were able to have a tremendous experience observing alligators in a natural, clean and safe setting. The drive through the park and the ability to get out of the car and explore was amazing! We counted 20 gators on a cool overcast day as well as countless water fowl. The Rangers and volunteers were first class and we... More

It was close to 90 degrees today and we wanted to see some gators, but we were not up for a long hot walk. Savannah National Wildlife Refuge to the rescue. A four mile loop, narrated on AM radio, of protected habitat filled with gators of all sizes, water birds, turtles, and more. The visitors' center is beautiful, with spotless... More
