On our way to Hilton Head, we drove the four-mile loop and were pleasantly surprised by the beauty and the wildlife. On our way back home, we stopped in at the Visitor's Center. The introductory film was very informative as were the displays. We also enjoyed the short nature hike behind the visitor's center.

I've always loved alligators and as long as you go at the right time of year (early Spring is best) you'll definitely see them, lots of them. Plus, it's great to actually bicycle around the refuge to see what other nature you might find from all sorts of birds to raccoons, to bobcats, turtles. I go here as often as... More

The 4-mile loop road allows visitors to see a wide variety of birds in the marsh. There are also alligators, trees draped in Spanish moss and a beautiful magnolia tree gracing the entrance. There is a comfort station at Mile 1.

This was the surprise of our trip if I am being completely honest. I wanted to go there but since it’s a little ways out we didn’t. Then as we were leaving and driving up the backroads to Charleston we saw it and decided to take a 15 minute detour. That turned into a 1 ½ hour drive through the... More

This place is relaxing and very scenic. If you have never seen an alligator you should definitely go here because you will see them here. The drive around it is nice and only 4 mile long. Not far from Savannah which is a big plus.

I was looking for a place to hike and take photos while we were staying in Savannah. What a nice find this was. I was there early in the morning so there were only a few people and lots of birds. Oh yeah, and a few gators. Always fun to see for this Chicago boy!

We had some time to kill before driving to Charlotte for an evening flight home, so we went to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. We took the four-mile Laurel Hill loop and were stunned by its beauty. We had hoped to get a glimpse of an alligator; instead we saw many, most of them swimming in the muddy red water... More

Maybe I am not being fair, because we were tired and missed the turnoff to the visitor center. It was interesting once we found it. (Address does not show up in GPS) We tried to go the Laurel Hill loop, but changed our minds. It is dirt with gravel, at least the part we tried to enter. I did not... More

This place is full of alligators an different types of birds. If you are a bird lover, this wildlife has all types of birds flying around. Be sure to bring your camera. You can stop on the drive through trail and take pictures.

This is a hidden gem. We just happened to find it and were so glad we did. There is a nice museum and then a beautiful 4 mile ride through the refuge. You can pull over to take photos or hike one of the trails. And it is all free!
