I am a history buff and I loved the wood work. If you are interested in how the Legislation works, call & you may be able to observe.

I always like to go to state capitols and tour them, wherever I live and visit. The SC capitol building was refurbished and restored in the mid-90's and is beautiful. The tour is very interesting. The statues and monuments on the grounds are interesting also. As the Cradle of the Confederacy, there is a strong Confederate influence; e.g., the metal... More

Standing tall in the middle of all the modern buildings was a beautiful work of art. We were actually in the area for dinner and stopped to take pictures. The granite columns are spectacular!

We had family visiting from IN and wanted to show off our beautiful Capitol grounds. They were amazed with all the beautiful statues, memorials and beautiful landscaping. They were especially impressed with the stars located on the outside that mark areas where Sherman's cannon balls struck. Such an awesome part of our history. The grounds are just gorgeous and the... Guide - who didn't have to do anything late in the afternoon - showed the 10- minute video to a few of our who straggled in late, and then another tour guide was doing a late tour for a group. Bought a few things in gift shop which were lovely, and the place itself is just gorgeous and full of... More

Take the guided tour of the interior if you can, but go inside even if you don’t. The visitor door is near ground level on the east side of the building. After passing through the security check you’re welcome to use the restrooms, check out the beautifully columned lobby, browse the little gift shop -- and of course, cool off... More

Too many statues and stories too list. My favorite are the bronze stars, which indicate where cannon balls hit the building from Mr. Sherman's army. Must see!

Walking around the state house in the evenings in the summer is great exercise and neat especially as the sun goes down and leaves a warm glow over the state house grounds.

Timing is everything at the SC State House! If you're visiting from the second week of January through the second week of June and can be there on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, you can see the state government, the General Assembly, at work. The State House has two wings that on one floor house the SC Senate and SC... More

The immaculately kept grounds are filled with monuments and markers from and including Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War,etc. A worthy side trip when in Columbia.
