We scheduled a Civil War walking tour with local historian/legend Jack Thomson. We were pleased when Jack himself walked through the door. It was a rainy, thunder and lightning day, but Jack was undaunted and off we went with just 4 people in the tour. Jack was informative, funny with a unique sense of humor and VERY receptive to questions... More

My wife and I took this tour on March 3, 2015, with Paul Hedden as our guide. Paul was terrific. Like us, he is a "Federal." Although my wife and I were the only ones on the tour Paul went all out. We learned a lot. Be prepared to walk but it's worth every step. Before we said goodbye Paul... More

Chilly morning with 8 other people. Tour guide (not Jack) did not seem well organized, overly wordy in some places, and breezed by what could have been interesting sites, read from 3x5 cards at times. Unique to this tour were some old photos taken from the same vantage point as we were standing, and that was pretty neat. But the... More

My wife and I did Jacks tour today and liked it.I usually do not do tours but I enjoy that period of our history, so decided to do it. I have read quite a bit of Civil War history, but was not familiar with the Charleston aspect except it started here. We found Jack to be very knowledgable and he... More

Our tour lasted 3 hours and we walked all around Downtown. Jack is extremely knowledgeable and a fun character himself. We discussed the slavery and the free slaves that owned property of the time.

My wife and I have been on many tours in many parts of the world. Jack Thompson was our tour guide and was the least likable guide we have ever had. He seemed bitter that the south lost the war, and he insulted the "Yankees" often. It was a good thing there weren't any "darkies", as he called them, on... More

Wow, how different perspectives can be on the same tour! My wife & I took Jack's tour on the recommendation of friends who visit Charleston often. We would probably not have taken the tour had we read the Trip Adv. Reviews beforehand. We found the tour extremely informative and well researched. Jack has personally researched, located and compiled both letters... More

I live in Charleston area, and wanted to take a weekend guest on a walking tour. I bought this tour through Groupon, thinking it would be of interest to my friend. As it turned out, we were the only two people who showed up for this tour on a Saturday morning. That should have told me something. When he took my... More

On the day we took the Civil War Walking Tour Dennis was our guide. Dennis was very interesting and knowledgeable. My husband and I believed we got our monies worth. We were only in Charleston for a couple of days and were trying to see as much as we could without breaking the piggy bank. As we walked Dennis pointed... More

My husband and I had taken a tour through the civilwarwalk.com website with a different guide approximately a year ago. We booked the tour again to take my parents because we had learned so much on the previous tour. Our guide this time, Jack Thomson, was terrible. He was hard to hear, did not discuss the war, and his sarcastic... More
