My wife and I have been on many tours in many parts of the world. Jack Thompson was our tour guide and was the least likable guide we have ever had. He seemed bitter that the south lost the war, and he insulted the "Yankees" often. It was a good thing there weren't any "darkies", as he called them, on... More

Wow, how different perspectives can be on the same tour! My wife & I took Jack's tour on the recommendation of friends who visit Charleston often. We would probably not have taken the tour had we read the Trip Adv. Reviews beforehand. We found the tour extremely informative and well researched. Jack has personally researched, located and compiled both letters... More

I live in Charleston area, and wanted to take a weekend guest on a walking tour. I bought this tour through Groupon, thinking it would be of interest to my friend. As it turned out, we were the only two people who showed up for this tour on a Saturday morning. That should have told me something. When he took my... More

On the day we took the Civil War Walking Tour Dennis was our guide. Dennis was very interesting and knowledgeable. My husband and I believed we got our monies worth. We were only in Charleston for a couple of days and were trying to see as much as we could without breaking the piggy bank. As we walked Dennis pointed... More

My husband and I had taken a tour through the civilwarwalk.com website with a different guide approximately a year ago. We booked the tour again to take my parents because we had learned so much on the previous tour. Our guide this time, Jack Thomson, was terrible. He was hard to hear, did not discuss the war, and his sarcastic... More

Jack's unique focus of photography presenting history was thoroughly enjoyable. The 3 hours just flew by. His commentary was not at all like the all-to-typical droning of many tour guides, and Charleston has a bunch of them. We highly recommend the tour for anyone who can be on their feet for most of 3 hours, but not for children under... More

6 of us attended the tour with Jack and it was informative. At times he was difficult to hear, so a portable microphone would have made a considerable difference. The tour moves along at a nice pace and really provides ample opportunity for some wonderful photographs. Jack takes a "you are there approach" to the tour, which can sometimes be... More

I was on one of the private tours with Jack and the man is phenomenal. He really puts you into the mindset of being in Civil War Charleston and how the overall economy of the south functioned. I am reading his book now and it follows up well from the tour. I had been in Charleston many times but it... More

My wife and I love to take city tours. We have toured dozens of cities and you will not find a tour hosted by a more knowledgeable guide. Jack Thomson is a rare find. He shows you some of the most interesting places in Charlestown's Civil War past and tells you about the people who lived and died there. You... More

Took the family on Jack's Civil War tour of Charleston. We have been on many walking tours in other cities but this was by far the best we have experienced. Jack is very knowledgeable, friendly and tells the story of the city in a very engaging manner. He has pictures from the war and presented them at the actual location... More
