Family owned and operated since 1983, Old South Carriage Company offers fully narrated hour-long tours by licensed guides wearing the Confederate uniform with the Red Sash. Come to our English-style stable at 14 Anson Street, just 2 blocks from The City Market and meet our friendly and professional staff. Reservations are not necessary as tours depart every 20 – 30 minutes throughout the day. A ramp leading to a platform makes boarding easy. Old South Carriage Company uses French Percherons and Belgian draft horses. These sturdy employees vacation at Sugah Cain, the owner’s 65-acre plantation on John’s Island. For 2-3 months annually, these beautiful horses are free to run in large pastures or leisurely graze under century-old live oaks. Tours operate daily from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 (DST) 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (EST). « less

Enjoyed a very enlightening tour of Charleston with Arden, our tour guide, and Dave, our well mannered horse. For traffic control, the City of Charleston assigns tour companies alternating tour routes by the luck of the draw. Our tour route included Rainbow Row, the Battery, White Point Gardens. Arden was full, of facts and a great ambassador for Charleston. It... More

Our carriage was the last ride of the day so there were only six of us plus the driver. It was nice because we weren't crowed into the seats. They divide up the carriages (from all companies) into three routes so the streets don't get jammed. So after they told us our route, we were off. We saw quite a... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our carriage ride! Our driver, Shawn, was very knowledgeable and friendly. He seemed to really love Charleston and enjoyed talking about it. He also talked a lot about our horse, Bill, which we really enjoyed. He seemed to really care about Bill and invited us to pet him when the ride was over. Everyone with Old South... More

I loved taking this tour. The carriage driver whose name was Arden was awesome. It was obvious she loves her job. Her knowledge of Charleston history is extraordinary . What really made me even more comfortable was she added so much of the history of African Americans and their contribution to Charleston history in the tour. Arden also gave us... More

I recently took my 8th grade history class on a carriage tour with Old South. I have taken several tours in previous years with many different companies. This is by far the best experience I have had on any tour. From the very beginning, the employees were friendly and willing to help with all my booking concerns and questions. Upon... More

Our first time in Charleston and this carriage tour gave us ideas of how we spent the rest of our stay in the city. It was an easy place to find and the Old South Carriage and the staff is wearing white long sleeve shirt with a red band tie to their waist. There are other tours but the Old... More

Tours leave every 15-30 minutes so reservations are not necessary. You can buy tickets online or at various booths around downtown Charleston but you must visit the stable to check in for your tour. The horses seemed well cared for, we witnessed our horses temperature being taken before we headed out. Our tour guide was very nice and we did... More

This was the second time we visited and plan on taking a carriage ride each time we come to Charleston. It is a must do. The drivers are informative and are excellent drivers. They treat the horses well also. The tour includes info about the history of the city and also the horse...humor included. Loved it!

I don't think anyone should go to Charleston without doing a carriage ride. I expect that most of the guides for the various carriage rides (who also guide the horse) are quite good, but Mike from Connecticut was outstanding. Besides the historical and architectural details, he was quite funny and did a great job of connecting with the group. Many... More

We had an outstanding experience with Old South Carriage today. Our zone 2 tour worked out great - an excellent route. The guide was informative, extremely personable, interacted well with those of us on the tour and handled Dave the horse very professionally. There are a number of good providers of carriage rides, but we had a number of locals... More
