I have been to countless museums dealing with the War Bewteen The States (Civil War), but never before have I seen such an abundance of personal articles belonging to the men (named and unnamed) who fought. Although this is a small museum, I spent four hours here, and would have liked more, but was forced to leave because of time... More

This rather faded and melancholy museum is like a Confederate widow's attic, crammed with relics of the "Lost Cause," arranged in cases without much logic or curatorial skill. You won't learn much about the war or the reasons behind it, but you'll get a lot of insight into the way the south glorified and mourned the Confederacy. That said, it... More

There is no doubt that this museum contains priceless artifacts of considerable historical significance. But it is not so much a curated museum as a collection of stuff out of the basements and attics of Charlestonians. There is so much piled on top of everything else that it's hard to differentiate the piles of uniform buttons from the preserved correspondence... More

Small but great museum. There are so many pieces in here that are of national historic importance. The first South Carolina flag to fly the day after they seceded from the union is here. There are battle flags with blood stains on them, weapons, letters, uniforms, a lock of General Lee's hair, and the list goes on and on. There... More

Neither my husband nor I felt this location warranted the admission charged. It's a smallish exhibit compared to others we've seen. More

Many people go the the city's public market but never walk upstairs to the museum. Not a large museum but it is very well done. More

My initial reaction was disappointment- no tour , the women at the desk just asked for the money and told us to look around. I had hoped for some insight but none was offered. When we started wandering around, we realized the history that was in front of us! Each book, uniform , flag, sword, etc told a story. It... More
