We went for the mummy, and it didn't disappoint. We also really liked the whale exhibit. Nice and clean. Staff was friendly.

We explored this museum to escape a rain storm and were happily pleased with our experience. I especially liked the history exhibits and learned a lot about Charleston and the culture of the area. There was an Egyptian exhibit that seemed a bit out of place, but overall we thought the museum was interesting. There is a ten-dollar admission fee,... More

This is apparently the oldest museum in the country and that, in itself, makes it worth a stop. But after visiting, I was glad I did as there were some interesting displays that played to my proclivities. The facility was clearly not the original as it appeared to be a 1980ish building, give or take. The displays were mostly on... More

This is the oldest museum in the United States and has a very interesting collection of items pertaining to the history of the South Carolina Low Country and the state in general. There is also a section showcasing some of their very old artifacts ranging from Egyptian mummies to Roman pottery that was acquired before the museum decided to focus... More

We figured we couldn't let a chance to visit the "First Museum in America" pass us by, and I'm glad we didn't. The Charleston Museum is a gem if you want a real sense of the city and its history and culture. Highlights for us included the writings and firsthand accounts of the Civil War, plus the extensive information on... More

Bought the three site ticket which included the museum and two old homes owned by the museum, Joseph Manigault House and Heyward Washington House. The Museum had some great exhibits, I loved the firearms section and I never realised they had a big earthquake. Charleston has a rich and varied history.

We spent a cold windy day at the Charleston SC Museum this past Sunday. The Museum was founded in 1773 and is the oldest in the US. They have over 500,000 artifacts there. The visit starts on the 2nd floor with a time line of South Carolina starting with the Native Americans who lived there, The exhibits wind round through... More

Went on a rainy cold day - this is walking distance from the Market - 15-20 minutes & you could also grab the free trolley that heads up that way. We paid list price for admission ($10). There was a lot to see. We should have read up a little bit because we spent too much time at the beginning... More

Well worth the time, one hour or more. A mix of audio visual with the exhibits, history well done, not stuffy or crowded. well lit, modern building.

The wife and I are not much for museums but we both enjoyed our time there. A nice variety showing the history of the area with only a bit of filler displays.
