We took a van tour on a Thursday and saw a sign outside the church advertising a free organ concert the next day. We attended and it was great. They had a guest organist that played the beautiful pipe organ and it was an unexpected treat. The church and surrounding cemetery is very beautiful with lots of history. Worth your... More

If you are into churches or history, you will find St. Helena's to be of interest. It is one of the oldest churches in the country with some very interesting graves within the cemetery. Many graves date back to the early 1700's. The story of the church is quite interesting.

When we stopped by there was a docent on duty. She was full of all kinds of information. She told us about the history of the church and some of it's former attendees. It was refreshing to be in a church where the history of it's church was important, not just the religion. The church was beautiful and I was... More

The oldest tombstone pre-dates the revolution. There tombstones from revolutionary war vets, civil war vets and many of the founding families of Beaufort.

I simply had no idea that this area was as old as it is and the church is proof of that history. Beautifully maintained with fascinating gardens and grounds.

Seeing a church that was started around the inception of this historic town was pretty interesting. Even better was the graveyard that surrounded the church grounds. There were confederate and American flags next to graves beside one another. Truly worth seeing if you are a history buff! An easy walk from Bay Street if you are down there shopping already.

The old church, now an Anglican church, was a surgery during the civil war run by the union army, but did "surgeries" on union and confederate soldiers. Many soldiers from both sides of the war are in the old graveyard that surrounds the church, and is open to the public. Many graves are marked by flags indicating which side of... More

This cemetery unlike most others in historic cities is open to the public 24/7. It is beautifully maintained with graves dating back to the 1700's. Flags and markers for union and confederate army veterans are well preserved. I even found 2 markers for Revolutionary War veterans.
