One of the 16 National Cemeteries authorized by President Lincoln in 1863, this is a beautiful and sobering reminder of the price of freedom. The stark rows of crosses, the beautiful live oaks among them, the graves marked with numbers for the "unknowns", the separate area for the Confederate dead, the mass grave for the nineteen black Union Soldiers killed... Very beautiful and well-maintained facility. Particularly pretty with wreaths on many of the headstones. This should be a stop on any trip to Beaufort.

Having spent some of my childhood in Beaufort, we never ventured to the National Cemetery. After our son joined the USMC and was at Boot Camp in Parris Island, we revisited Beaufort. In doing so, we visited the National Cemetery. That was 10 years ago. We now help each year with Wreaths Across America in December helping to lay wreaths... More

The cemetery is very well kept and looks beautiful. I have been to several funerals there and was impressed. The people who work there are very nice and very informative. The cemetery just put in new space and that is where my parents will be placed

When I think of National Cemeteries, I think of Arlington. That one was here in Beaufort was unexpected. It was one of the first of the national cemeteries and was designated by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Thus, the interred are from every conflict and war from the Civil War to Afghanistan. in 1989, 19 Union soldiers of the all... More

We always stop at national cemeteries. This one dates from the Civil War and has 2 medal of honor recipients, the "Great Santini" and a lot of history. Check the VA web site for a map and list of notable graves.

Going there on the day of the terrorist attacks in Paris amplified the sacrifices these people have made. Residents park and read in the shade of the trees and tours go through this historic site.

It is not often we get to see something on this level. We've all heard of Arlington. But there are many others. A wonderful history lesson started by President Lincoln before the end of the Civil War. But still current and poignant today.

Really enjoyed the peaceful drive through the cemetery. Hoping someone could answer why some of the tombstones are covered in something orange-colored. There seemed to be no pattern to it. Thought maybe it was due to high-iron content water sprinklers? Or someone mentioned pollen.
