On our way to Newport we made a minor detour to Bristol Rhodes Island and visited Blithewold the mansion and gardens. The self guided tour along with very helpful docents made the tour rewarding and informative.

Blithewold is a wonderful place to explore - the house has been well maintained and contains a very nice museum about the family who once lived there - the Van Wickles. The gardens are beautiful - the Rose Garden, North Garden, Enclosed Garden, and especially the tranquil Japanese Garden and we saw them on a rainy day. A must see... More

A well presented mansion with enthusiastic volunteers; we appreciated their warm welcome and introduction to the background to the history of the family and the house itself. The laminated cards in each of the rooms open on the self guided tour were of sufficient length and detail to give one an insight to the life of the family a hundred... More

Family travel, stopped for the tour of the mansion and grounds. Well maintained historic mansion, very well preserved. It was an incredible expeirence. Guides were excellent, and gave us a great insight on how it was to be very very wealthy in the 19th century. Beautifully decorated. It must be special sight at Christmas. The gardens were just beautiful. Loved... More

My wife and I greatly enjoyed our visit to Blithewold. The mansion and grounds are beautiful (I had never seen a sequoia in New England before...), while the docents are extremely friendly and helpful. And Augustine Van Wickle was an absolutely stunning woman -- reading about her life reminded me of Katharine Hepburn.

After visiting the Gilded Age mansions in Newport, Blithewold may seem like a bungalow, but it is impressive in its own right and a stop worth your while if you have the time. The gardens are especially beautiful, and the house is decorated beautifully for Christmas.

I am a Rhode Island resident and have visited many Newport mansions and private homes during Christmas in Newport but was not prepared for the joy of visiting Blithewold. The home is on a human scale with a light and airy feeling, picturesque views of the bay and magnificent grounds. Although the family was obviously financially secure the furnishing are... More

My wife and I recently visited Newport RI. In the past we have been to several of the mansions in town. This year we chose this mini-mansion in Bristol RI. I enjoyed it more than any of the mansions we have seen in Newport. It is much smaller than most Newport mansions, but the ability to tour on your own... More

This is truly an amazing place. The beauty and up keep that goes on here is none stop. This place is also on the water and should be added to your places to see list when in Bristol
