The Mattress Factory Museum (so named because the main building -- they are four scattered around in a one block area -- used to be a mattress factory) has installations of fabulous, present day art if you are willing to suspend your preconceptions of what is typically called art. In various rooms are installations of things that you walk through... More

One in our family of 8 wanted to go to the Mattress factory and we agreed, not so enthusiastically, to all go. It was a highlight of our trip! All 5 of the teens thought it was so cool and it was the only time everyone liked the same thing! The kids had limited knowledge of modern art and had... More

Oh wow, do not waste your time unless you're a huge modern art fan. The whole second floor was just a dark room that you're supposed to sit in. There was also a "slide" that started on one level, went through the floor to the other level and then went out the window. I don't get how this is art.

I’ve always enjoyed modern art displays, and this was no exception. You can pair a visit here the same day you go to the Andy Warhol museum, as they’re in the same vicinity. We walked to both of them from downtown Pittsburgh, which is very manageable and pleasant. You get to walk the Andy Warhol bridge on the way there!... More

This is the only Insallation Art Museum in the US. It is thought provoking and pushes the limits of self expression and the creative sprit of the artist vs the important of aesthetics. ( ie some of the artwork is about the creative process and/or your experience with the art-Not just what it looks like) Some installations are fun: Yayoi... More

Don't listen to the negative reviews. My family absolutely loved this museum, and I have three teenagers! I have been to many museums but nothing even remotely like the Mattress Factory. Their art is so unique and different and thought provoking. The only thing I would say is that it is not the best place to take small children.

I went here for a second time in May after visiting last year because I had gone without my daughter the first time and thought that she definitely needed to visit the Mattress Factory. It is full of very unique installation art. Every floor that you visit contains several different installation pieces. The part of it I loved the most... More

This place was one of the coollest and most interesting museums I have ever been too. It has been around for decades and is 4 (5?) floors of installation art with another 3 floor building down the street. It is odd and strange and through provoking. We got lost in the different exhibits for hours. This is a must see... More

I have never been a fan of installation art but this place changed my opinion. The exhibits are well set up and give explanations that help the viewer to understand the intent of the artist. Really fun and interactive art. I will definitely be back!

We expected to spend a half hour but instead were there for two hours. The art was fascinating. Each installation was one-of-a-kind and each appealed to different perceptions –space, color, time. My husband’s favorite was an illusion created by red light being projected into a corner of a pitch black room. Mine was a fully mirrored room that played with... More
