I went to Rock Ford Plantation for the Yuletide Tour, a celebration of 18th century yuletide customs. Traditional music was played in the hallway, knowledgeable guides were dressed in period clothing, and the mansion was decorated for the holiday season. Cheerful and charming, it was a glimpse into how Edward Hand and his family celebrated Christmas.

This old plantation is a perfect setting for Fall family shots, or wedding. The surrounding park is nothing but beauty; covered bridge, horse trails, old, big trees with vibrant changes of color in their leave. A lovely place for all.

Got lost but arrived after a few turns. Plenty of parking. We were right on time for the 3 p.m. tour ( no pictures allowed in house). The tour guide was dressed in period clothing and gave a good tour of the house: room by room. 4 rooms in 1st floor, 4 rooms in second floor and the basement. There... More

Rock Ford Plantation is the 1794 Georgian style brick mansion of General Edward Hand, adjutant general to George Washington during the Revolutionary War. It sits on the banks of the Conestoga River one mile south of Lancaster. The Georgian style brick mansion remains remarkably preserved and essentially unchanged architecturally. It has 95% original material that is historically accurate to the... More

Lovely home nestled in south Lancaster in the county park. General Hand was Washintons physician. Tours offered. Not sure open all year round, but do have special tours for the holidays and night-time ones. Lots of outdoor space too for kids to run a bit. Also rentable barn for events.

Thank you for your recent review of Rock Ford Plantation. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your tour of our historic site and appreciate your kind comments. Visited this historic home and did not know what to expect. Had a private tour by the director and certainly learned a lot about the history of our country and the people that made it what it is today. Fascinating home and wonderful insight into General Edward Hand. Certainly worth your time.

This lovely pre-colonial era home is a worthwhile stop in Lancaster. The original owner was a friend of Washington, and there are a few Washington artifacts in the home. It is furnished with beautiful period pieces, and the docent was lively and informative. Interestingly, the home did not get electricity or plumbing until the 1940's, and was never really modernized,... More
