I'm a fairly experienced hiker and quite fit but this was definitely one of the hardest things I've done - both in terms of the challenging terrain (steep, lots of tree roots and rocks) but also in terms of the heights. There were several difficult parts if you are scared of heights but they are both fairly short. The pace... More

The hike up Mt Gower was unforgettable. Our guide Jack was a font of information and had many stories about the mountain to back up his knowledge of all the plant and animal species we passed on the way. The whole trip was one photo opportunity after another, whether it be a fascinating rock formation, tree canopy, endemic bird species,... More

Erupting out of the ocean to great heights, the mountain is seen from where-ever you are on the island. Didn't attempt 8+ hour climb up & back but magnificent views from around the island & bird watching tours.

Did this with Jack Shick ($60+$10pp transport) Mon & Thurs. Good idea to book before you leave home as they can be cancelled due to weather and this give you a chance to do it on another day. Have to be very fit and agile and not a height phobic to do it. Not enough flora/fauna commentary for me. Maybe... More

Unfortunately, you are not permitted to climb this without a guide. This means they must decide if they think you can make the climb or not. Unfortunately, Sea to Summit chose to take all and sundry. We spent so much time waiting for the stragglers I was getting very angry. It took so long to get up, we didn't get... More

I booked this walk in advance through the hotel a few weeks before I went to Lord Howe and on seeing Mount Gower started to wonder whether I was up to it. My wife and I do lots of walking, much of it in mountains but even so, it looked pretty challenging. On the day it was OK. At the... More

We went with Dean Hiscox from Lord Howe Environmental Tours. The trek was harder than I was expecting. If you are not regular hiker, even if you are fit, then thus will be challenging trek. And I would advise against it if you have a fear of heights. The day was warm and we did not have any problems with... More

There seem to be two guides doing the Mount Gower walk. I went on a Wednesday with Dean Hiscox from Lord Howe Environmental Tours and had a great time. Dean had been the ranger on Lord Howe for ages and was very well informed, rattling off the scientific names for plants & critters and giving interesting stories about them. I... More

Our guide dean was very helpful was very experienced. It is a very difficult walk but we were advised to do another walk to goat house cave prior to mt gower to make sure we were up to it! Good advice! Magical mist forest at the top and dean called down the wild providence petrels which were unconcerned about us... More

Mount Gower trek is as the reviews say tough and all up hill. Heights can be a bit gripping at times but if you take the right mental attitude with you there is no reason why anyone with good fitness and agility cant get to the top, its not Everest. Don't forget your binoculars, I took mine and they were... More
