Laid back, small village town, friendly people and good folks all around. The off-the-beaten path places: great, made from scratch crepes at the corner across from the town's main park, Juanita's char-grilled chicken and carne asada on the same block as the town's marketplace.

the town of san juan del sur is great...the beach is ok. from what I understand the nicest beaches are just a few miles in either direction, although I didn't go. It just lacks the kind of sand and shade of water that beautiful beaches have. Good place to hang out in one of the restaurants on the beach though.

Don't really understand some of the hype, but the beach is average at best. Really. The water is nice and clear and such, but no waves to "hang ten" with. There is no shade anywhere -- no palm trees, no parasols, no cabanas. Oh, plus the sand is an unappealing shade of blackish-grey. (That's not to say that black sand... More

Absolutely beautiful beach! Quite, clean, nice beach restaurants. You can also pay in dollars in the most restaurants.

Lots of locals and travelers intermingling, getting their buzz on and enjoying the town. I wasn't there to surf but met some very interesting people while I was there. I have fond memories.

Im skeptical about vacation beaches that don't have the typical clear blue waters and white sand. SJDL beach however was awesome! It was so much fun to play in the waves, and the water actually is clear most of the days, the sand it just darker therefore the water the looks darker. We walked all the way to the end... More

Loved it, so peaceful and wonderful place to visit. The water was so clear and I enjoyed the great people of San Juan. Very welcoming location. Definitely worth visiting.

We did a private snorkeling tour with Rana Tours. It cost an extra $45. What a huge mistake! It was supposed to be a 3 hour snorkeling excursion. What should have been a 40 minute boat ride to Costa Blanca beach turned out to be over an hour due to our "guides" going very slow so they could fish. Needless... More

We did not have high expectations, but we were pleasantly surprised by the nice beach. We were there in the morning, so it was quite quiet...a few people swimming and sun bathing. We took off our shoes and walked in the surf, stopping on the way back to sample the local beer at a beach side restaurant. It was quite... More

I really wanted to say something positive about the SJDS beach, but coming from Florida, it is difficult. The best thing about it is the view: of the ocean, fishing boats, etc. The sand is dark, coarse and extremely rocky in places. Also, dogs, including strays, roam freely, so watch your step! There is debris at the upper part of... More
