The Gerding Theater at the Armory is the home of Portland Center Stage, the city's leading professional theater and one of the top 20 largest regional theater companies in the U.S. PCS's mission is to inspire our community by bringing stories to life in unexpected ways. Founded in 1988, PCS attracts more than 150,000 theatergoers annually with its blend of classical, contemporary and world premiere works, along with its summer playwrights festival, JAW. PCS also offers a variety of education and community programs tailored for patrons of all ages. Located in Portland's Pearl District, the Gerding Theater at the Armory houses two theaters: The U.S. Bank Main Stage and the Ellyn Bye Studio. It was the first building on the National Register of Historic Places - and the first performing arts venue - to achieve a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification.

Forays into the theatre district of most U.S. cities can be fraught with traffic hassles, high cost and questionable performances. This venue provided none of these. An easy 10 mile commute from the suburbs, affordable parking a block from the door, friendly and efficient staff at the bar for pre-show drinks and a very understanding usher combined to make this... Live music and wine before the show in stylishly hip foyer setting, was a novel idea. Comfortable theater seating, of which you can take in unfinished beverages - apparently you just need to ask for a lid for your wine-sippy cup. I paid $47 for a live musical show - and felt completely engaged in the performance.

Just saw Ain't Misbehavin'. Great production!!! Loved the theater. Well designed - nice open reception area. Comfortable seats with lots of leg room (husband in 6'3") and we really appreciate the space.

All the seats are good at PCS. Ticket prices are reasonable -- this is a great venue to take your family to a play without breaking the bank. The set design for this production was extremely well done -- depth of field, running water, realism were all highlights. Lighting is perfect. The performance was captioned, which was a nice addition. I've attended so many wonderful shows at the Gerding Theater. Since the building houses two different performance spaces, (the main stage and the smaller lower level black box theater,) their season is always very diverse. The lobby cafe is a great place to grab a snack or a beverage before the show and do a little bit of people watching.... More
