We happened upon the sanctuary after visiting the lighthouse. It is a memorial to people who have died at sea. It was a solemn reminder that the beauty of the ocean comes with danger and sadness for many families.

We were just exploring the Newport area and happened upon the beach access that had the memorial. Apparently it is open all the time because the gazebo is completely open on the east side. A semi-circle of benches faces a high counter with photographs. Probably because of the ever present dampness and the way the photographs are in ordinary frames,... More

The aura of sacred spirit embraces you when you enter this beautiful sanctuary dedicated with great love to the memory of the intrepid fishermen who have been lost at sea. You will be touched by the very personal messages and tributes and struck by the fact that new names are added almost every year.

My wife and I read every epistle in the sanctuary and truly felt the pain of those left behind when a loved one was lost at sea. The risk/reward of the seaman or woman is not something most of us have experienced. those making a living from the sea sometimes have no options as far as risk is concerned. The... More

It was a good opportunity to teach our children about the dangers of the ocean and how re remember our loved ones. Picnic area was great too. nice area to stop with a group if you've packed a lunch. some small trails and plenty of... More

The Memorial is sobering as people don't realize how dangerous fishing in the Pacific can be. See also the memorial in Depoe Bay. But this is also a great picnic park and viewing area with perhaps the best view of the bridge and a really great interpretive area. Truly one of my favorite spots in Newport if not the entire... Had no idea this was there when I went before, but we saw it this last trip. Very nice to have a place where you can cast your thoughts outside yourself. It is a beautiful place. A beautiful bay. Perfect.

I have been to Newport almost 20 times and always visit alllll the lighthouses. Then one day while visiting the Yaquina Bay lighthouse I noticed it! There is a place to sit and just think about the ones who lost their lives and the ones who lost loved ones. Neat and sad!
