The marina is ok and there are a variety of activities to keep you or your children busy including wind surfing and lessons are also available, the Gorge is the wind surfing capital of the United States and people flock here seasonally to take advantage of the abundant gusty days. If that isn't your cup of death defying deeds there are other tamer ways to spend your time here in this bountiful area that produces huge quantities of fruit including the best pears I've ever eaten and let us not forget the cherries that are so tempting as you see them in huge clusters on the trees by June. It also has a tour through the " Fruit Loop " 35 miles long through these scenic orchards that I was luck even to meet someone last spring that took me horseback riding through this stunning sight as the petals fall from the trees as if snow flakes.
Also no trip to Hood River is complete without a drive along the Historic Columbia River Highway that was the only way to reach this area before the I-84 was built, unfortunately I would not risk driving my 30' recreation vehicle along this hairpin turning highway but by car it should be quite enjoyable, also in all stop by the Chamber of Commerce also located in the marina and pick up some travel brochures that include maps and enjoy the local area.

Kite boarders, wind surfers, stand-up paddlers, and boats...welcome to Hood River. The river park at the Port of Hood River is a beautiful green space that runs along the river. There are concession stands. boat launches, picnic areas and beaches (with restrooms). There is a fee for parking.

You will need to dodge the strings of the kite boarders since this is the Kite Boarding Capital of the World (or at least the US). The water is choppy due the winds that whip through the Gorge here but it doesn't seem to stop the fun. Stand-up paddle boards are available for rent and you can take lessons to kite board. Even if you don't do any of the water sports it is still fun to watch the colorful kites.

If you are walking toward the river, turn around and you will get a beautiful view of Mt. Hood. Restaurants and shops are just a short drive up the hill in the town of Hood River.

If you want to learn paddleboarding or you're experienced, there is something for everyone in Hood river. On non-windy days, it's a great thing to try while in town.

There is a great park for kids, a swimming area in the Columbia, restaurants, and it is always fun to watch the kite surfers.

Take a picnic lunch and enjoy your time watching the sailboats and folks parasailing. Plenty of photo opportunities as well.

This area is located between two highly-rated hotels and just north of I-84, providing a lot of open, flat walking space, with the museum and visitor's center at the south end and the Columbia River at the north end. To the northeast is the toll bridge to/from Washington state. There's grassy area, some flowers, and of course boats. On the day and time of our visit, it was lightly used.
