On our way south to Crater Lake, I'd spotted this park on the map and thought it was worth the stop just to see what was there, and we weren't sorry. If you want to see a real volcanic landscape, this is it. I've been to 47 states and not seen the type of terrain I saw here. The land... more

We planned to use the Newberry National Volcanic Monument as a rest stop between Crater Lake and the John Day Fossil Beds, but we ended up staying much longer than expected. There is a $5 charge to get into the monument. The fee includes access to the visitor center, the cinder cone, and the entrance to the lava tube (though,... more

This place was very interesting. The visitor center offers several exhibits that detail the geologic history of Bend. I agree with another reviewer who recommended hiking around this location. There is a long path that takes visitors through an area where lava flowed around 7000 years ago. Lava Butte offers a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape, including many other... more

This was an unexpected highlight of my recent trip to Bend. The park contains spectacularly varied scenery throughout and will easily keep any traveler enthralled for an entire day. The rangers working in the various stations are also very helpful and friendly, adding to an already positive experience. Personally, I found the trail along the Deschutes River to Benham Falls... more

Newberry Volcanic National Monument is quite spread out, and has several sections. We visited Lava Butte, the Lava River Cave, Paulina Lake and Paulina Creek Falls. Opening hours to these attractions vary depending upon the time of year. They are open full days, 7 days a week only in high summer. The Lava Butte is quite dramatic. You drive up... more

I’ve seen lava flows, lava tube caves and dormant volcanoes in Hawaii, Oregon, WA and Idaho. And each is unique in its own way. Newberry IS worth your time. DO: 1. Worth the drive up to the top of Lava Butte, a cinder cone. The narrow asphalt road is a tight squeeze if a car approaches from the other direction.... more

This is a great place to explore. Be sure to drive up to Paulina Peak for a great view of the entire caldera. Also go to the Obsidian Flow and hike the entire loop trail. Lastly, stop at Paulina Falls on the way out for some nice hikes along the creek and falls. more
