Quick urban hike with beautiful views of Bend and the surrounding mountains. Lots of free parking. Wide trail, big elevation change. Not a lot of shade, in the heat of the summer it would be better to go in the morning.

Right in the center of town, Pilot Butte is an easy drive up to the top, or you can hike the approximately one mile trail to the top. From the top, you can see--on one of the 300-plus clear days in Bend--the Cascade Range to the west from Northern to Southern horizon, including dozens of glaciated and/or snow covered inactive... This easy drive- to site was recommended by our hotel in Bend. It is one of only four cinder cones in the U.S. located within city limits (another is Diamond Head in Hawaii). We spent a little while at the top reading the signs and identifying the other mountains. Mt. Hood was hiding, but The Sisters were visible and it... More

We climb the trail each morning to start our day. It canbe dusty but so worth the effort. On a clear day you can see from hood to thielsen. During the summer you can drive up if that is more your cup of tea.

We have both hiked to the top of Pilot Butte and drove our car to the top. I recommend driving as you are hiking at times on the road. It's also directly uphill the last 20% of the hike! From the top, you should look at the large compass and identify the mountains in the distance. This reference really helps... More

In Bend? This is a local favorite that will not disappoint. Don't go for ambiance, just good food. It will barely all fit on your plate.

Lovely to be at the top and see all the individual mountains. There is a mountain map in the center showing the names. We weren't there on the best of clear days, but it was still fun to look around.

I hike this all the time. It's a good workout and the view at the top is amazing. A must see if you are visiting Bend. Instead of driving up, try hiking up the dirt trail. It's under a mile and worth the hike.

Easy to get to, you can walk the road or the " nature trail" to the top, fairly easy hike and well worth it!

For those of you who only drive up the 5 to the beach towns, you're missing the best part of the state. Pilot Butte is one of many extremely scenic views and places to visit in Central Oregon.
