Great way to spend a morning

Have to go to get a regular 6 month fix of Barter Books. I could spend a fortune each time I go...and sometimes seem to!! Great refreshments...bacon sandwiches to die for.

Well worth a visit. It's the largest second hand book shop in Europe and you can take your dog in as well. They serve coffee and biscuits around an open fire, in winter, very cosy.

Love it! A unique experience that we are drawn to whenever we are near Alnwick. Parking can be fun! A wide range of books make it difficult not to spend your money.

Fabulous, atmospheric converted railway station which is now home to a vast and eclectic collection of second hand books. Lovely cafe in the original waiting rooms. Be prepared to spend hours in here without realising it.

From the moment I first wandered into Barter Books, I knew this was a bookshop like no other. The trains running over the tops of the bookcases are fun, and the selection of books on sale is nothing short of incredible, this really is a place one can loose hours browsing... Then there is the station buffet, where delicious homecooked... More

Wish we lived nearer to Barter Books! Have been here each time we've visited Northumberland over the years and absolutely love it. Be sure to leave enough time to enjoy a coffee by the fire while you browse through your short-list of chosen books. It can be quite cold inside in winter so make sure you wrap up warm!

I will never be a convert to electronic books and this place epitomises why! The smell of old books, the feel of the leather-bound, the embossing of titles. the never-ending assortment of design and colour on the spines, the gilding on page edges... With rare first editions behind glass and paperbacks and hardbacks shelved row upon row, this place has... More

Built in the old Alnwick railway station buildings, this book shop is huge. You can spend all day in here, reading, drinking tea and eating, and with your dog at your side. What could be better ? The Old Waiting room has the coal fireplace still, the old benches and makes a very warm quirky cafe. I totally love this... More

This place is amazing...don't know where to begin.. Like a labyrinth of wonder :) look above head height for quotes to inspire you or see the big mural or train running round it's track. Big comfy chairs/settees, log fire, refreshments... You could just lose yourself in this place. Full of relaxed people, staff and customers :) it's addictive!
