If you are used to the standard neat and tidy, hands off, impersonal castles, this is not for you unless you're looking for something different. It was an extraordinary feat to rescue this building from a ruin. It's full of interest at every turn and yes, the torture chamber exhibits may be a little too realistic for some. However the... Having visited the wild cattle in the morning, we went to the castle after lunch. Some of us have been before so we knew it would be good. The castle itself is great and filled with the most bizarre collection of stuff. It is all fascinating and a curious mixture of fake and real eg fibre glass stone arches in... More

Visited chillingham with our kids last week. The family ticket is reasonably priced and there is lots to see and do. The highlights are the torture chamber and dungeons. If you want to buy food you should take cash as the restaurant can only take card payments by getting you to return to the entrance. (Information not negative). Also buy... More

Decided to visit Chillingham Castle on impulse and was very disappointed. After a long walk up a very potholed drive to the castle, on first site it looked very nice. The castle building is picturesque from the outside but inside it is dirty, disorganised and dangerous. The stairs are steep and very badly lit and the rooms are dusty and... More

Went here to see the Wild White Cattle in the park - which was fantastic. Honoured to be allowed into the old park where they live. Chillingham Castle probably hasn't been dusted since the Medieval ages but its brimmed full of all sorts of artefacts. Lots of interesting nooks and crannies, but if you're looking for a perfect (artificial) layout... More

Said to be the most haunted castel in England ,we were there on a sunny day so saw no spooks! Dating back to Saxon times with additions in each age this is a fascinating hoise. It's privately owned so restoration hasn't had the big bucks of Natinal Trust or English Heritage properties. The tea room has a flagstone floor -... More

Firstly, if you are expecting something like Chatsworth or Castle Howard with regards decoration, presentation and amenities, well this might not be for you. However, if you are looking for something a little different then this is it. It started a little confusing as we followed the sign off the road but just ended up near a church with others... More

Odd place in the middle of nowhere but very interesting! Gardens lovely lots of space for picnics. House in need of work but so many interesting things to see, could do with more information about the artefacts there. Overall good day out!

Your enjoyment of chillingham depends on what activity you are visiting the castle. If you are just going to see the castle you will be disappointed. The castle is run down, dirty and it feels as if the exhibits are items that the owner does not want in his apartment. The museum contains poor quality photo albums, old clothes which... More

As you drive thru the grand gate and up the driveway it feels like it is going to be a special place and from the front it looks good but so disappointed inside. The building itself is ok and quite interesting and not as grand as some of the local castles but it is so stuffed full of things that... More
