A very different experience from Alnwick and Bamburgh which we visited earlier in the week but nonetheless highly recommended. An eclectic and eccentric mix of artefacts in every room. Chat to the room guides. They were only too happy to supply lots of information. For example in the silk room, the silk that adorns the walls was destined for Chatsworth... More

This was the second time we had visited. I prefer this castle over Bamburgh and Alnwick castles as they seem too 'polished'. Chillingham has a charm the other castles just don't seem to have. The weather was a gloomy misty day which added to the atmosphere. This year the minstrels hall was open and what a lovely surprise we got.... More

I went with a group of four on a drizzly day.We hardly saw anyone outside our party. Chillingham is known for it's supernatural activity. There is a well in the middle of a hallway with a skeleton it! It is like being in someone's house and you even see their cluttered attic! Mannequins and all sorts of items from different generations.... More

We have visited a lot of houses/ castles/ forts in India / tourist attractions and historic places in our time but this was honestly one of our best days out ever. Thoroughly enjoyed it, so atmospheric and fabulous to be allowed to touch things when usually everything is cordoned off. The guides are so friendly and enthusiastic- normally I can't... More

We visited this castle during our 2 day trip to Bamburgh and I cannot fault it. We thoroughly enjoyed the castle tour, the guides in each room were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. We took a good 2-3 hours walking around the 3 floors of the castle and dungeon then we sat down for a little while in their tearoom which... More

Although we visited on a very wet & unpleasant day in October, the overriding view of my family party was that they were more glad to leave than to have arrived here, I'm afraid to say. The castle is certainly an absolute treasure trove of historic nic nacs, including a number of ice sledges used in an Everest expedition and... More

Fourth time here. We stop over for a weekend & always do a tour. This year we were graced by the company of Sir Humphry Wakefield who was ever so charming.yes it's not a castle of grandure & splendour so don't expect 5stsr hotel quality, it's more a quaint spooky eerie place that really draws you back year after year.... As others have said, if you want a sanitised picture perfect interior of a castle then this place may not be your cup of tea. If, on the other hand, you want the opportunity to see something that is unique, interesting and not specific to one historical period this is well worth a visit. Each room is a collection of...
