Filled to the gunnels with family heirlooms and stories. Mick Jagger's bath, an elephant's battle armor and kit from an Everest assent. Hide and seek in the gardens. Off the beaten track. Best to drive over the moor from the A1 for the views.

Chillingham is an authentic medieval castle that looks like someone has dumped all their belongings around the rooms. It is far from orderly, but this adds to the interest, and there are a few knowledgable room guides who can explain what you look at. You can see the dungeon, view the roof battlements, and wander around many of the rooms.... More

The castle looks very spooky and forbidding from the outside, inside there is a vast array of various antiques, curios and what can only be described as junk. Unfortunately a lot of interesting looking items and artefacts had no indication of their history or what they actually were, however there were lots of nooks and crannies to hold our interest... This once derelict castle has been lovingly restored. However instead of hiding all the exhibits away until the castle is ready it is all out and the history of it well presented. The grounds and gardens are very well presented and the dining area is set in a room with a huge open fire. Its well worth a visit and... More

First of all the castle and cattle are separate so this review is in no way a diss to the cattle tour which was excellent. Secondly if I could have scored this a big fat zero I would have done. A load of old junk in a falling down Castle. Massive disappointment. The castle looks to have around 20 odd... More

"It's Not Disney, this is the real thing" quote Andy, the tour guide. You will only get something out of this if it was meant to be was another comment made. Great place, Great history lesson. The Ghost Tour lasted approx 2 hours and was an excellent trip through life's macabre past and stories of the 'after-life' current activities. Disappointed... More

I stayed here with my father about ten years ago. We made it our "base camp" for our travels throughout Scotland & England. We never stayed in a castle before & we were glad this was our first. It was reasonable & very roomy! We explored the castle at our leisure & the caretakers were very friendly. My father enjoyed... More

We visited Chillingham castle courtesy of a discount offer, accompanied by our 2 grandchildren, and had a great visit. The eclectic collection amassed by Sir Humphrey, is unique and very different to many historic homes, in that you are not roped off from the exhibits but actually encouraged to touch and experience many of the objects, which makes for a...
