Luckily we had read a guide before we visited so were expecting oddities. I think the oddest was seeing the bedroom on show which was obviously in use, with a book and glass of water by the bed .... or was this for the ghost?? Great room guides, very helpful, especially in the great hall. Shame you can't take dogs... More

I'd live here! It's just mad Big old empty house filled with junk and clutter from all over the place. If you're after a National Trust place or the well turned out Alnwick or Banburgh then this is not for you. This is a bit more the crazier end of a Game of Thrones set or an undiscovered castle lived... More

Forget Alnwick Castle, forget Edinburgh Castle, forget Bamburgh Castle; Chillingham is the real McCoy. Stunning! Repeat visits are justified by the shear complexity of the place, the massive quantity of artifacts and exhibits, the depth and complexity of its history. The gardens, especially the large walled garden, are a delight and a visit to Chillingham's famous wild white cattle, a... More

great day at the castle lots to see but all jumbled up and in no particular order, recommend you go and see the wild cattle too but be prepared for a walk across the fields to get to them

A great example of a castle in this part of the world to visit, especially the dungeons to see how people were treated in days past. If in this part of Northumberland then do go there you will not be disappointed, lovely on a sunny day which it was like when we went Paul and Joan Bennett

Visiting wonderful homes, castles and gardens is one of life's great delights. Today in Britain we have many wonderfully documented and, illustrated places we can walk around but stand at distance behind a rope. Chillingham Castle is not like this. It is a tactile hands on explore of artefacts and curios, stuffy furniture, threadbare rugs and more antlers than I have... More

Dire - it felt scruffy, lacked consistency (historic house or junk shop?) and the room interpretation often consisted merely of well-worn type written sheets. Compared to its peers in the area, it was amateur. Utter waste of journey-time and entrance fee. Really needs a re-think if it's going to seriously compete with similar properties in Northumberland and Southern Scotland.

The tea room was dark damp dirty, fly infested, made me feel I'll, could not have eaten anything. Gardens fabulous. Place ridiculously cluttered with fake artifacts on the ground floor and in the tea room.

We did not know what to expect from our visit to Chillingham Castle. There is such a wide collection of items...from Artic Sledges and clothing....climbing Everest memorabilia.........a room full of 'torture implements galore!...in the 'museum' there were collection of all sorts of unrelated items..........as well as the ''apartments' to see.....which are still in use.....sometimes. We did not get to go... More
