Wonderful experience seeing the wild cattle and what a well informed and skilled communicator the ranger (Ellie) is. Memories to treasure for a lifetime! Well worth the muddy drive up the hill to the higher car park unless you are young and fit!

Visited as a family and the castle has a very eerie feel, you could easily be back a few centuries ago! A very enjoyable if slightly scary day had by all and worth a visit when in Northumberland

This has to be the most extraordinary castle you'll ever visit! It's said to be the most haunted and by the time you've seen the torture room (not for the faint-hearted), dungeon and staggering collection of arms, you'll believe it! You can stand in Edward 1's footsteps by visiting his tower and looking over the grounds through a window made... More

I must say when I arrived, I thought "Oh dear" - the house has been rescued and is not exactly in perfect condition. It is stuffed full of "things" which had been acquired (I don't think they belonged to the house) but in the end I warmed to it. It's a fantastic structure and the gardens are lovely. I'm glad... This is a great castle! It's a proper old castle with wonky stairs, small doors and a scary torture chamber. It has character and atmosphere by the bucket load, and around every corner is something entirely different than the last! Lots of interesting artefacts that you would not see anywhere else... a real steptoes yard! The room where the tea... More

Very good but by far the most eccentric stately home. Good tea room. Well worth a visit also see the wild cattle. Makes for a excellent day

A hidden gem in a beautiful setting, the castle is interesting and full of surprise not your standard national trust type experience at all. For those less able there are a number of stairs as the castle has three floors with winding stairs. Car parking is a short walk away. We had lunch being Sunday a great value for money... More

We visited after getting a half price deal. It is certainly an experience. Gruesome delight in the display of the torture implements. Not sure what to make of a 'castle' that really just has piles of material scattered throughout the rooms - akin to one of those long established second hand shops where chaos is the organising principle. Beware anyone... More
