We visited to mix our interest of getting out of the Capital for the day and art galleries. It's about 15 minutes casual walk from the station along the seaside, the bold architecture ensures it stands out on the shorefront. Up close reveals a cafe, shop full of trendy items and an welcoming buzz from families and young people. Compared... More

Day trip to Margate to visit the Turner Contemporary arriving at the very imposing railway station much more impressive than the "Turner".... two sheds in the distance, but a pleasant walk along the prom on a nice sunny day... Margate desperately trying to be Hastings but more like Blackpool...hate to be there on a grey rainy day.. Most of the... More

The exhibition (Self) was an absolute behemoth. 5 or 6 rooms filled with the A* artists who've created via their own medium and practice examples of a self portrait. Gilbert & George, Andy Warhol, Turner and Van Dyck alongside dozens of others. It felt well curated, sensitively spaced and the right amount of description written next to the art work.... More

Inspired by the film Mr Turner to visit Margate? Save your money and stay at home! The property on the sea front that once boasted Regency style is today squalid and decayed. The real blot on the landscape however is the Turner Contemporary! It does hold one small painting done by Turner when he was about 15 ... but nothing... More

Unlike John J, I think the gallery a bit of a blot on the landscape but nonetheless, I DID enjoy the exhibition. I guess it changes from time to time but I thought it had a good mix of old and new. I liked the Van Dyke and the self portrait of David Hockney but struggled to find the Turner... More

From the first glimpse as you walk along the seafront the Turner makes a striking visual statement and the interior is equally impressivel with floor to ceiling windows looking out to sea with a great quality of light. The very thing that attracted Turner to Margate , the current Self show is full of great pictures including the massively influential... More

Not very interested by self exhibition, parts were just odd, some nice portraits but not enough, would prefer a different exhibition. Probably good addition to seafront though

It feels very much like it caters to one type of person. The art is always the same, it would be nice to have more of a mix. The staff fell more like prison wardens then enthusiasts. Still don't really see the point in spending so much money on it when there is so much around it that could do... More
