Went down with my husband and 3 horses. The weather was wonderful - the
footing on the trails was great. We had just come off a harsh winter - so naturally
the trails needed some minor work - - and we gladly picked up some branches
that had fallen over the trail... but they were not impassable.

The staff was very helpful - we got lost - but it wasn't hard to find our way back - thats
what you get when you explore on your own. Some steep hills - and some easy
hills. You have to ride out through a clear-cut area - but gave you a gorgeous vista
of the terrain for miles.

I had a cattle lesson from the owner - he really gave me some insight on how to get
the most from my horse. Both my husband and I enjoyed ourselves so much we
came back the following weekend and brought friends with us.

The staff was super accommodating. They did absolutely everything they could to make sure that the stay was a good one. I cannot say enough good things about them. If we wanted to go round up cattle they were fine with that. If we wanted a five hour trail ride. No problem. The stalls, corrals, barn was great. Very happy with the accommodations for the horses. The trails were not challenging if that is what you are looking for. They are well marked and the staff is always happy to guide you if you need a guide. A few negatives are: They let several horses/donkeys roam free. They are freeloaders. If you get anything out of your trailer make sure you latch the door. While unloading my tack I did not shut the door tack door tightly and they got into my grain and ate my weekend supply. It happened at the trailer next to mine as well. Also, it did seem a little run down. The bathrooms didn't work. If you don't cook your own food there is no food for miles. The owners are fairly new and are trying really hard to make a go of it. I hope they do. They are open to and asking for suggestions. Compared to Flying W, Cooks Forest Scenic trail ride, Sharon's Horse Heaven it's not there yet. I hope this helps. Happy Trails!!

Smokerise does now have rental horses again!! Or, you can take your own. As of March 2014 the rental horses are back!! Can't wait to get back down there for some beautiful scenery, relaxing by the pool, and spending quality time with my family and the folks at Smokerise:)

I can't even begin to describe... The pictures of the house from the review last year... That new refrigerator didn't work, smelled. The dishwasher had 6" of moldy water standing in it probably from last year, the garbage disposal was not working and the kitchen sink plugged. The hot tub had no water in it, the picnic table was broken. Grass was 2' tall. The stall gates couldn't be shut because of the grass and wouldn't latch if it could. No firewood as promised from the manager Jeff who is a lazy joke. The place was not clean, bathroom ceiling leaked and toilet ran continuous. Some electrical outlets didn't work, no light bulbs and some lamps had no shade. No filters for coffee or toilet paper was the least of it. Part of the wall was caved in from water damage and closet doors off the tracks or gone completely. No propane tank for the gas grill. The electric went off for about 6 hours then the water went out. This was $175 a night for 2 and $15 for any extra. Of course I didn't pay that but to not even try to accommodate us like bring us a picnic table from up the road, firewood, a propane tank, offer to unplug the sink or drop off some liquid plumber...mow the yard or make us a path to the house because the sidewalks were covered in mud...Or even be apologetic. The manager sat in his office about 200 steps away. He said he'd knock the price to $100 a night. OMG it should have been compensated because we stayed 3 nights with no refrigerator and did get access to free ice. Woo hoo. I LOVE the trail riding and property. The manager sucks. Never signed a liability release or had to show proof of coggins for horses. STUPID.

It's so sad that this place is practically in our back yards, but is so over-priced that not many from here can even afford to enjoy the place! That's both rude and sad....I get tired of hearing the same crap all the time that "It's priced this way to keep the 'riff-raff' out! Well I'm sorry, some of us work hard everyday and are not druggies and would love the be able to spend the weekend for a mini-stay-cation but we can't because your prices are OVER BOARD RIDICULOUS!

This place needs to be condemned. View the pics and ask yourself why would anyone stay here even for a night. I must of been on something (family obligation/dysfunctional thinking/"rolling with it"/just not using wise judgement). Stayed here on a "site unseen" arrangement for a family reunion. I will go get breathing treatments soon because I think there was black mole in his house. Seriously...I gave this place one star only because it had a new refrigerator, but my sister spent an hour wiping it down due to being messy.

Started off with a lesson. Jess was really nice and I gradually built up confidence. Went back and relaxed in The Spirit of the West Cabin. The next day I decided on going on a 2 hour trail ride. It was pleasant and the scenery was just beautiful. I then went and fed the horses some apples. Again back at the cabin we made dinner and relaxed in the hot tub. Last day I did one more lesson which I really learned more about balance and it was a great help. We will definitely be back next year. The staff was accomadating and friendly. The cabin was clean and spacious.

Wonderful trails, spring, summer or fall. Great time practising mounted cowboy shooting. for me the highlight was a cattle drive up the side of the mountain - my horse had never been around cattle before and she took to it like she'd done it all her life! Fabulous time. Heading there again in Octobver

Me and the girls spent 4 days at the ranch, learning about horsemanship and riding from a real cowboy! We stayed in a beautiful cabin on the 1,000 acre ranch, close to everything we needed. We were able to use their beautiful horses and do plenty of riding. The folks there treated us well, like extended family, and did everything to make our stay everything we had hoped it would be. I recommend you take a camera to capture all of the beautiful scenery and animals. If you plan to ride be sure to take long pants and shoes, no sandals or flip-flops. Be sure to tip your wranglers, they work hard.

My family started going to smoke rise over ten years ago and we come back multiple times per year. Smoke Rise is a place where generation after generation of family members come and learn how to ride horses and learn to become better people in general. You will meet some of the best, most down-to-earth people here. If you want to come ride horses, explore, work cattle, fish, hike, or swim with fun people in a strong family environment- Smoke Rise is for you! Remember, it is a working cattle ranch, so don't expect it to be the Waldorf Astoria in NYC... there will be dirt and dust! So if you're a sissy, you better cowboy up ;)
