We visited Berkeley castle with our 4 year old son. We had an amazing time! We toured the castle and grounds on our own and were so impressed with what we saw. This is definitely worth a visit if you are visting the area or live nearby. The house is full of history and fascinating objects including the art on display. The guided tour is most informative. The grounds are beautifully kept as well. Don't miss a visit to the Butterfly House! Very good value for money overall and a great day... more

Berkeley Castle is a great place to go for a day out and it is easy to get to from my home in Bath. The inside of the Castle is fascinating, especially the King's Gallery where Edward II was imprisoned and murdered. It is frightening to think of the suffering that he must have endured in the dungeon. Another favourite... more

For a castle where a sitting monarch was murdered, this was not an exciting experience. Because this is an inhabited household, you see mostly furnishings. The castle has been extensively altered over time and if your looking for 12th century authenticity, look elsewhere. Berkeley Castle is a Norman Castle, started in the 12th Century and completed in the 13th Century. It is filled with furnishings because it is still a family home - and after 24 generations it is still in the ownership of the family who built it making it the oldest inhabited castle in the country.
