It was the last place of residence of King Edward II, who was imprisoned in the castle and murdered within its walls. The Castle is open from Easter until the end of October. The Butterfly House reopens on 1 May, walk amongst the stunning butterflies. A visit to the Yurt Tearoom is also a must! Please check our website for open days and hours. « less

We took the tour and it was delivered in a rather formal, yet still entertaining, way. It was about 1 hour and 30 mins but seemed to fly by. The castle's history is interesting but you can get that from Wikipedia. The tour guide gives that history a personal feel so you are more likely to enjoy the learning. The... More

The castle is an amazing place, and holds an interesting place in the history in England. The local volunteer guides are enthusiastic & knowledgeable, and on my most recent visit (outside of opening hours) I found the volunteers preparing for the festival of the harvest & only too happy to stop and chat about what they were doing, and the... We went on the guided tour (no extra charge) and it was one of the best, most interesting tours I have experienced, well worth the visit. The guide was most knowlegable and the tour took about one and a half hours and flew by. A definite must if you are in the area

Thank you for recommending a visit to Berkeley Castle. Our Guides are fantastic, they all love working at the Castle and this really comes across when they carry out their tours. Many of our visitors comment on how refreshing it is that we don't charge extra for guided tours, it's all included in the admission charge. If you're reading this... More

I greatly enjoyed my visit to Berkeley Castle, one with a fascinating history. My companion and I had an extremely knowledgeable tour guide which made the visit much more educational than it would have been otherwise. The Castle, finished in 1154, is the second-oldest continuously occupied building in the UK [1st is Windsor Castle]. King Edward II was imprisioned in... More

I have had to think very carefully about writing this review as I attended a wedding here, the venue was hired for the day for the family wedding. Instructions on how to get to the venue are very poor, don't use the instructions on the web as they take you to the front gates, which are closed when hired out,... More

Thank you for your compliments regarding Berkeley Castle as a wedding venue. We're sorry to read that you felt let down by the catering at the wedding you attended. It's extremely unusual to hear of this sort of issue at wedding events, as our two recommended caterers have extremely high standards. More

We visited Berkeley castle during school holidays and were surprised to find how quiet it was there. We took two children (age 12 and 9) who decided to do the castle first instead of the Butterfly house, at the entrance the children were given a few sheets of paper with activities on involving finding clues and identifying butterflies, we had... A slice of history brought to life and made interesting and fun by excellent Guides, connecting the Castle with Royalty and Gloucester Cathedral. Excellent. Needed more time to see the other attractions.

This is a very interesting castle, with loads of atmosphere. Tiny wavy glass in the windows, creaky floorboards, lovely carved stone lintels... The tour guides are exceptional, and recommend waiting for the next one if you arrive in between tours. The family history and the story of the castle inhabitants is fascinating, and the display items are worth a closer... More

Another wonderful descriptive review, thank you so much. Your comments regarding the Butterfly House made me smile, I've also struggled to get a good photo, as soon as I focus on a butterfly, it flutters away and I'm left with a fuzzy photo! More
