This a substantial recreational forest, well signposted from the A68. After the toll gate (manned on weekends) you will find plenty of parking in the general area of the visitors' centre. Many people now come here for mountain biking, however, it is also very good for wildlife. In numerous visits we've seen Crossbill, Green Woodpecker, Green Hairstreak, Adders, and the... More

Large area of forest with open clearances - excellent for picnics, country walks, cycling and much else besides. Reasonable admittance charges - £4 per car for unlimited stay, no matter how many passengers. "A river runs through it" - the river Wear, quite shallow at this point close to its source: it's possible to cross by stepping stones. A Great... More

Mummy Daddy and one 7 year old and one 8 year old had a great day out . Did the Gruffly Trail and the little ones just loved it . We was very lucky the sun was shinning and it was lovely and dry so didn't need the wellies but would think you would need them in the rain .... More

We visit hamsterley forest several times every year, it's lovely to see the changing seasons and theres plenty to do whatever the weather as long as your prepared. Wellies and waterproofs are useful, my children love rolling down muddy banks and splashing around in the stream. The play area is good but can get quite busy in the summer and... More

Probably the best mountain biking in the north east with a wide variety of standards and distances. Also good for rambling and although the 2 sports are catered for seperately care has to be taken by both sets of participants. Easy to get to as not far from the A68 and clearly signed. There is also bike hire and horse... More

We did the yellow walk (and in the rain!) and it was beautiful. Dog was able to be off the lead most the way once past the children and bikes and into the forest. Yellow walk was about 2.5 miles. Will return for orange walk at 4.6miles. Definitely take wellies as it was extremely muddy in places but all good... More

Had a fun day out with the kids on the gruffalo trail. My 2 year old enjoyed the picture hunt sheet while my 5 year old enjoyed looking for the letters on the alternative gruffalo hunt sheet, well worth the £2 for the optional pack (I bought 2 to save arguments and was glad I did as both kids enjoyed... Visited with grandchildren to do the Gruffalo Child walk, it was very good. If however you have quite young children, it was quite a long way to walk there and back. Many different pathways and trails. The only thing that stopped me giving 5* was the fact that people were aloud, seemingly to have dogs off leads, we met a few,... More

We've had a brilliant day out exploring the forest and following the gruffalo trail - great fun with 2x two year olds who were occupied all the way there and back with plenty to see and do. The trail is easy to get round with a pram too which makes it an excellent family day out. £3 to park and... More
