With its headquarters in the fine old Peak District market town of Wirksworth, the Ecclesboume Valley line, at nine miles, is Derbyshire's longest heritage railway. The line runs through some of the most pleasant scenery in the White Peak, from its joint station with the main line at Duffield to its northern terminus at Ravenstor, close to the High Peak Trail and the National Stone Centre. The line provides services mainly operated by heritage diesel railcars, with four trains a day on summer weekends and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the high summer. The timetable is designed to connect with East Midlands Trains' services to and from Derby and Nottingham. Visitors may wish to take advantage of a 'zigzag choo choo' all Day Rover Ticket issued by the railway and Trent Barton providing an excellent opportunity for discount travel through the beautiful derbyshire countryside by bus and rail. Steam hauled services are also operated at peak periods, please call us to check what is running. If you would prefer to see the line from the Driver's cab or realise a childhood dream by taking the controls of one of our heritage steam or diesel locomotives then you can book that day to remember direct on our website. We offer a range of experiences to suit any occasion and budget.

We went one of the special 50s day. Getting off East Midland trains at Duffield, walked over the footbridge and as you reach the bottom there is a sign to the right showing the path to the railway (the train was already waiting when we got there), Bought our tickets from the shed next to the platform £14 each all... Fabulous trip on Iris. Glorious scenery. Would have liked to have seen more of the loco's stabled at Wirksworth and been given more information about what's taking place here, but the staff didn't seem interested in engaging with customers. Would certainly recommend the ride

Wanted to do this for a while as my partner likes old trains so it was a surprise trip. An OK experience, cheap through Amazon Local ( I wouldn't have paid more ) but the advertised journey length doesn't mention several stops for level crossing manipulation which meant that there wasn't much actual "travelling" ! Staff, throughout, were very friendly... More

We were just Passing and called in after spotting the signs . It was a beautiful sunny day so decided to take a trip back in time Personally I would have enjoyed a Steam Engine. There is nothing to match a mass of metal. turning itself into a living breathing mechanical beast. But it was Diesel day and to be... More

Dear 'Windfarmwatcher', Thank you for taking the time to compile such a lovely review of our railway. Our volunteer pride themselves on their approach to visitor hospitality and its is very rewarding when our visitors acknowledge their efforts. The railway is still in its infancy and we aim to increase our steam hauled services on our Wirksworth to Duffield service... More

Somewhat disorganised in that there was no clear signage or commentary with regard to location, boarding or disembarkation instructions. Although we had been given numbered seats for the 'afternoon tea' section of the trip, upon boarding the train we found that it was just a 'free for all' with regard to seating. The cream tea itself was good and the... More

Dear 'littlefish979', Thank you for taking the time to write a review about our railway. I'm sorry you felt the access to your seating for afternoon tea was somewhat disorganised. Unfortunately we had a new train crew on that day who were slower than normal attaching the engine on to the train. This resulted int the catering staff being late... More

First time for me to this place. A steam train would have been better of course but we did get to see one at close quarters which made my boys day. He also got an enormous train book for the princely sum of 10p from the carriage which he's leafing through now before bed. We didn't really make any attempt... More

Dear 'chambta', Thank you for submitting a review about our railway. We are glad you had such a good time. I'm sorry you found the play area not up to standard. We left on the two carriage diesel powered train to Wirksworth from Duffield and really enjoyed the 30 minute ride with an interesting commentary from the guard. We spent a couple of hours wandering around the lovely little town of Wirksworth. They do offer tours of the railway yard at Wirksworth if you desire. All in all a pleasant day... More
