With its headquarters in the fine old Peak District market town of Wirksworth, the Ecclesboume Valley line, at nine miles, is Derbyshire's longest heritage railway. The line runs through some of the most pleasant scenery in the White Peak, from its joint station with the main line at Duffield to its northern terminus at Ravenstor, close to the High Peak Trail and the National Stone Centre. The line provides services mainly operated by heritage diesel railcars, with four trains a day on summer weekends and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the high summer. The timetable is designed to connect with East Midlands Trains' services to and from Derby and Nottingham. Visitors may wish to take advantage of a 'zigzag choo choo' all Day Rover Ticket issued by the railway and Trent Barton providing an excellent opportunity for discount travel through the beautiful derbyshire countryside by bus and rail. Steam hauled services are also operated at peak periods, please call us to check what is running. If you would prefer to see the line from the Driver's cab or realise a childhood dream by taking the controls of one of our heritage steam or diesel locomotives then you can book that day to remember direct on our website. We offer a range of experiences to suit any occasion and budget.

Last Friday I had an amazing day at the EVR on my 'drive a diesel' day. The staff went out of their way to make it a relaxing and enjoyable event which is certainly turned out to be. In the morning I drove the railcar, in the afternoon class 33 Swordfish. Then when we got back to Wirksworth we were... More

This operation is obviously well managed and administered by friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. It is worth while to discover the history of the origins and the activities over the near 100 years of trading operation. Nowadays, a medley of rail experiences, throughout a season of regular and special events, makes this an attraction to visit in the Derby Dales.

A little gem in the heart of Wirksworth. Definitely worth a visit and a ride on a train up into the Peaks, where you can get off and go for a wander before catching the train back. Give the dining experience a go!

Informative staff who talk to you throughout the journey. Wirksworth has a functional station and engine sheds along with information and local town. Duffield has significantly less to do. Worth going for lunch at the railway public house. Get off at shuttle for this

A three-course meal aboard an evening steam train made a truly wonderful surprise anniversary gift for me. Attentive and very welcoming staff, even allowing me onto the yard, unsupervised, to photograph the diesels and DMU's on site. Lovely food was complimented by the fact that me and my wife had a cabin to ourselves. Just a bit of a shame... More

Busy with volunteeers and well patronised, but oh dear! We arrived to catch the 14:15 from Wirksworth which is the first loco hauled train of the day. At about 5 past, it was announced that the diagrammed loco had failed on shed and a substitute was being prepared. Eventually got going at about 14:45 with a tatty class 31/4 on... More

Dear, 'Locoengineer 1954', Thank you for choosing the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway for your first Tripadvisor review. Our scheduled locomotive developed a relay fault. This is a very rare occurrence which, unfortunately the driver could not rectify within the timeframe required. A substitute engine, which was currently being serviced prior to entering the maintenance facility for bodywork repairs was quickly made... More

We had contacted the railway before our visit via Facebook as I'm a railway modeler and wanted to check out the Derby Lightweight Cars. One of the team escorted me down to the cars and showed me around, most helpful. We had a bit of time to kill until the last service of the day, so had a good look... More
