Visited while we were walking round Whitehaven. Cheap and cheerful, a nice insight into the rum and slave trade throughout history. Nice shot of rum at the end of the tour which was certainly eye opening! Nice couple of hours, would recommend as something to do here.

Having lived in Cumbria for years I have heard of the Rum Story on many occasions, but never actually visited. Until now. Group of 4 adults 4 children (2 under 2) one 6 and one 7. The 2 youngest were free. As somebody else mentioned from the front it looks tiny and unassuming but when we got inside we found... More

One of the best day out I have ever had. I was met by a really nice lady who told me all about The Rum Story, then she gave me a map to find my way round with. I saw all sorts of things and learned a lot. LIAM ATKINSON age 8

This is a really interesting place. There's a lot of information and very good displays, and it kept us occupied for a good hour and a half. I don't have children but it looked to me like there would be plenty to keep the kids entertained. And the tot of rum at the end is nice, especially on a cold... More

I've visited this exhibit many times over the years and it is always good, the story of slavery in Whitehaven and the rum trade, the old rum shop (where the museum is located) is great to get a feel of times gone by. I love the tour and displays which really give you a feeling of what was behind the... More

We had a little difficulty in finding this attraction because the map on the leaflet we had picked up from the tourist information office did not give the address so we had to ask someone for directions. The museum covers three floors of an old warehouse and on entering the exhibit you find yourself in a tropical jungle complete with... More

Such a well worth while visit. We followed the trail through history. Well explained without managing to be boring. Good displays, both written and visual. It's up a small side ally but opens out into an under cover court yard where there's a cafe serving lunches and afternoon tea. Can recommend the full afternoon cream tea, you won't want anything... This attraction has been developed well, and the histories are interesting and accurate. A well worked out route following the history of the rum trade with Whitehaven. Added benefit was the tot of rum to warm you up on a wet day. I think this is a visit for older children as younger ones would probably be a little bored.

I found the Rum Story really interesting and informative. The story is self led through a labrynth of displays, it covers the Jefferesons story in particular but also goes into rum production, slave trade and navy life. On the day we visited the heating wasn't working so we were offered a free cup of tea at the end of the... More
