Fascinating insight into the rum trade

I found the Rum Story really interesting and informative. The story is self led through a labrynth of displays, it covers the Jefferesons story in particular but also goes into rum production, slave trade and navy life. On the day we visited the heating wasn't working so we were offered a free cup of tea at the end of the... More

we almost walked by the building so unassuming is the outside. Once inside it is a tardis! The attraction traces the history of the Jefferson family in Whitehaven. It is well displayed and uses a mix of archive materials, video clips and written boards. To improve this further some interactive exhibits would be helpful. It is not really child friendly,... I hired the vault for my husbands 40th birthday. The staff were amazing & couldn't do enough to help. From Louise emailing & helping with the details, to Claire the cook arranging a fantastic menu. Wendy & the lovely ladies who served, decorated & supported the night. Thank you ladies

Had a really good time visiting the museum, started off in the jungle which was a bit 'plastic' but visit got progressively better as we entered the rum cellars and followed the trial of rum and how it was linked to Whitehaven, slavery and the museum buildings. Well worth a visit as lots to see plus a great rum and... More

We went on a rainy afternoon and spent much longer going around than we expected to as it was very interesting. There were lots of different aspects covered - the family, the growing conditions, the slave trade, the naval connection, prohibition etc. etc.. We were the only visitors at the time and we took our time. To be honest it... More

Visited Feb 2015 and the heating had failed!! It was COLD but they gave us each a tot of Rum at the end of the visit to warm us up -Bless 'em! We had a light lunch in the Courtyard outside (as we had a dog with us) - a bit cold to say the least but the food was... More

Although the advertising and leaflet I have states "OPENING TIMES - Daily, ALL YEAR - 10am to 4.30pm. Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years's Day", it was closed on a Sunday in early November. We weren't the only ones disappointed. And not only us vsitors, some locals were also surprised and disappointed. But everyone we met said this... More

The entrance fee is very reasonable and the 'tot' of rum at the end also helps to make this an enjoyable couple of hours. At the beginning we found it very informative, however, there is so much reading that, although we found it interesting, we started to lose interest toward the end. I think that if they 'lost' the last... More

Having been on the Plymouth Gin tour we thought we'd continue the tradition with the Rum Story. I was a little surprised by how dark and spooky it was, I know it was Halloween weekend but think it's like this in the height of summer. I think children would find it quite frightening and there was a lot of reading... More

Had an enjoyable time in rum story but not as exciting as I thought quite interesting but the hype is better than the experience . Visited the courtyard cafe afterwards it was awful dry cakes and scones where rock hard ordered three drinks which all came eventually and all three were wrong even after waitress had read our order back...
