The only downside I can think of is that it's not a "deserted" beach, and as you look around to the corners of the bay, you see plenty of development. But it's always quiet, has nice sand, and offers pretty good snorkeling off the beach (although we didn't see any turtles.)

We were a little disappointed by not finding turtles in thus bay, it is very shallow and a very short beach. Turtle Bay where our hotel, Hotel Akumal Caribe is on is loaded with turtles, a lovely beach...but too many day people. For quiet however, Half moon is good. .

Saw lots of turtles and fish along with cool coral formations. Relax afterward at Buena Vida for happy hour.

We were there 5 years ago and it was outstanding, now you can't get on the beach and it is full of seaweed and not maintained

We saw about 8 turtles and lots of pretty fish in about a one-hour snorkel. Be warned to bring $$ with you to rent life vests. We did not....and had to trudge all the way back to the parked car about 5 blocks away to get $$.

While the bay itself is stunningly beautiful, there were piles of seaweed 2 feet tall on the beach. All that rotting vegetation made the beach smell terrible. It's too bad there was nobody to clean it up, otherwise it would be an amazing beach. Unfortunately, mother nature has made the beach and water very rocky, so not much beach time... More

It doesn't matter what time of day you go, you're not going to find a lot of people here, as they are most likely all in Akumal Bay with the turtles. Go to Akumal Bay in the morning and then here in the afternoon. And swim out far to get to the best spots but don't near the crashing waves.

Beautiful place to spend a week or two. You can snorkel and see beautiful fish just outside your front door. Lapping waves at your feet, millions of stars at night, and great restaurants make this a wonderful place to be. Not to mention swimming with turtles and even better snorkeling are in walking distance.

My family of 19 stayed in condos on half moon bay for xmas last year. We all loved it there. Some thoughts if you are going: - bring water shoes. half moon bay is not sandy in the water. there is a nice strip of sand to walk along the beach but not in the water. -very quiet brick road... More

We loved this beach, swimming with turtles was awesome. Paid for a tour $25 each but it was worth it. Hung out at the baech afterwards and although crowded, it was great.
