The Wilmington Historic District is really delightful. It is both hip and historic, filled with restaurants, pubs and fascinating shops. It is on the Cape Fear river, and the famous Riverwalk winds all along it; you can walk from one end to the other, although the actual historic district encompasses several streets. Fascinating houses, horse-drawn carriages....well worth the trip.

Feels a little like the old South and invites aimless strolling and reading the history panels. It can be comfortable even on hot days per the shady areas and breezes.

There are Walking Tours, Horse & Buggy Rides and even Ghost Walks. But everything you will see is beautiful & historic. Wilmington was a Port City and many interesting people settled in Wilmington .. and built beautiful homes. There is also a Garden Tour (well worth seeing) attached to the Azalea Festival (April) & River Fest (October). Catch those along... More

Make it a point to walk the historic area, see the little plaques that provide such an educational touch to this city and appreciate the architecture that has been lovingly restored/maintained. Very pleasant.

Lovely area - we stayed here at the French House. You can take a tour bus from down near the waterfront and drive through all the houses which is easy if it is hot. Also the Bellamy mansion and the Burgwin Wright house are in this area. Check the last one is open though as its shut Sunday and Monday... More

We visited here this summer, man, it was just too hot to really enjoy ourselves unfortunately. There were lots of restaurants and shops which were really cool but we had to walk quite a ways from our parking and it was pretty exhausting! But I would definitely recommend this place in the fall through spring.

Went there overnight with a girlfriend and had a nice visit. Very historical with lots to do. We took the trolly ride to see the historic sites of the town. The guide was very knowledgeable and had some great non historical facts too. The town is quaint with lots of places to eat and cute shops to browse in.
