If you are truly wanting to visit a scenic beach without much human tafficking, this is the place. Be aware there is a ferry that you must pay to board. It's a nice little ride to a very long beachy walk to the actual beach. My advice: don't bring much to carry. It can get a little tough the way... More

No cars and limited access. Not too crowded. Take the ferry from Swansboro or boat over to Bear Island. Can't beat it!

It's simple. Barrier islands in the White Oak river basin. A wonderful pontoon ride of the islands and a day at the beach on the Atlantic Ocean. Can't be beat!! Just beware that it is seasonal but you can go to the website to see when the schedules are. Enjoy!!!! It's wonderful!!!!!!

Visitor's Center is housed in a very nice building that you reach through a short drive from the main road. Wonderful vegetation on both sides of the road leading to the visitor's center. Inside you will find nice displays ....especially interesting were those about Bear Island and the Loggerhead Turtle habitat. Very helpful person manning the welcome desk area. Clean,... More

Spent 5 days at Hammocks Beach State Park camping on Bear Island. We put our canoes and kayaks in at the state park dock which is very cool as the rail/roller system allows you to access the water without getting wet. It's a pretty long walk to haul your gear from the parking lot but the park does have trolleys... More

A gem of the Crystal Coast. We enjoy kayaking out for the day. No matter when we go always seem to be able to find a spot on the beach away from others. A shell hunters paradise. Can just unwind with the soundtrack of nature. Not busy like other beaches in the area.My son and I also enjoy camping overnight... More

If you are laboring over whether it's worth the walk to get to the beach at Bare Island, the debate is over! This honestly felt like we had our own private island to ourselves. Each campsite is secluded from the others by the high sand dunes, which allows ultimate privacy for your in camp adventures. Even when you go out... More

This was our first visit to Hammocks Beach State Park. They have a nice visitor center where you could buy a ferry ticket to Bear Island, about a 20 minute ride each way. Nice, clean beach. They have lifeguards and a concession stand on the island during the summer season.

The grandchildren loved the ferry over to the island. There is a walk to get to the beach. The beach is really nice. If you walk a bit you can possibly find sand dollars and some nice shells.

We love this park! Getting to the Bear Island might be a bit difficult because the ferry is small and gets sold out way ahead on busy weekends. The ferry ride is 20 min and is very scenic. Then there's a 15-min walk to the ocean side of the island. There are bathrooms on the island, water fountain nearby and... More
