ive played a fair number of tracks in my day and this one ranks way up there if not the best. every hole is a challenge and unique. will certainly test every stick in your bag a couple times over. undaltiing and firm greens make for a tough go if your approaches and flat stick are not cooperating. depsite wet... This is a cool golf course! Now that it has new greens, it's the best that it's been in 5 years. The reason I like playing Tobacco Road so much, it that it is different from all the rest. You need to be a pretty good golfer, with all the shots. The risk/reward factor is significant with shot selections at... More

Hi PJG964, I agree with your assessment about the course being difficult the first time but eventually a great score can be had. This course has some forced carries, multiple approach angles and mounds that guard the greens in which the golfer can use to their advantage. This local knowledge will only reveal itself after a couple of times around... More

I have been fortunate to play a lot of golf all over the planet. My 13 year old son asked me to name my top 10 courses. The list goes: 1) Royal Dornoch, 2) Royal County Down, 3) Tobacco Roads, 4) Royal Portrush, 5) Colonial CC (Fort Worth). IT IS THAT GOOD. If you are not a very good player,... More

Dear Mr. Price, Your post is very flattering and I think the late Mike Strantz would have agreed with many of your Top 5. Mike was inspired by Royal County Down when he studied golf course architecture overseas and some of the design elements of that great course in Northern Ireland show up in his work. We look forward to... More

Played twice. It was fun, but maybe a bit over the top with the tricks? Large waste areas, long narrow greens with massive undulations and lots of blind shots. After the second round, I thought that, less the ridiculous ninth hole approach and green, that it was not too bad. It was very slow to play both days.

Dear Suzy Q, Thank you for taking the time to post a review. I'll take "interesting" over "boring" any day of the week. I'm glad you found the course more playable the second go around minus the 9th. I, too, have trouble with the 9th hole which is the number 1 handicap hole. Please continue to play us when you're... More

I recently played Tobacco Road for the 3rd time in 5 years...a mere 16 hr drive from Toronto Canada...lol. TOTALLY WORTH THE DRIVE EVERY TIME....especially this time. In case you don't know, this is rated as one of the 'Top 100 Courses in the USA'...and rightly so. It's one of less than a dozen designs by genius golf course architect... More

Dear Mr. Martin, I remember checking you and your partner in the day you played. It is great to hear you had an awesome day. Thanks for playing The Road so many times and sharing your experience with others. As always.........Good golfing, Joe More

If you are in the vicinity be sure to play this course. If you aren't in the vicinity be sure to get in the vicinity to play it. While I wouldn't want a steady diet of Tobacco Road it is certainly a treat to play it. Almost every hole is blind including some of the par threes. Conditions were very... More

Dear Remsen62, We are glad you had a great experience and thank you for the generous review. We believe that our golf course architect did a masterful job of bringing out that "unparalleled scenery" that you speak of and we are fortunate to look at it every day. I am concerned that you may not have gotten the "official" yardage... More

I love golf but I'm not very good at it. I was here with a group of friends for the camaraderie but the difficulty of this course was clearly out of my league. Waste area everywhere, blind shots abound , most difficult course I have ever played. Somebody told me this is the 6th toughest course in the US and... More

Dear Radar, I'm glad Tobacco Road was a challenge that you couldn't pass up. I liked your review title of "bring balls" but I think you'll agree that if you lose one you can always look for it. Although you may not find your original, many times you'll find a replacement. We call that our loaner program:) Please come back... More

When you visit the Pinehurst, you have plenty of fine courses to choose from but you won't find another course like Tobacco Road. The course is definitely a peach when it comes to conditioning, but where it deviates from all others is in its layout. I have played all over the country and never experienced anything even remotely like this... More

Dear Mr. Clark, It sounds like you "got it". We actually expanded the putting green to make it into what you see today. There are some putts at Tobacco Road that you don't get at any other course so we wanted the putting green to reflect that. We realize that you're not going to play "The Road" every day, but... GReat course. But you must stay on the fairway. anything else could be trouble. The first hole is a little scary because your target is a little gulley that you must either hit or lay up or you will hit the sides of the hill. if you make it through then it is a blind shot to the green. Very... More

Dear Mad155, We are grateful that you had a fun time and found the course in great shape. The BBQ sandwich is my favorite but make sure you get plenty of slaw on it. After all, Tobacco Road is a little south of that Mason-Dixon line:) More

Have played this course numerous times, and thought we'd play again and check out the re-done greens. We didn't notice that much of a difference with the new greens. And actually, there are tons of pock marks (from ball marks) all over the greens from the grass that didn't quite grow back, so aesthetically, the greens don't look as nice... More

Dear Silver & Black Attack, I am sorry that your experience was less than satisfying at Tobacco Road. I too, like a “hands off” approach when I am playing a golf course. Unfortunately, the creative and visually stimulating design that Mike Strantz blessed us with can come with some challenges; speed of play being the biggest one. We had 165... More
