If you're a keen walker, you must try this area. Look at Julia Bradbury's German Wanderlust TV programme on YouTube for a flavour. Highly unusual, with metal "staircases" up to the dramatic sandstone plateaux which rise above the forests. The Malerweg links some of the best routes, but (while it's a long-distance path needing 6 days) it can be done... More

This destination is likely the main reason why anyone visits this region. You will not be disappointed! The views from the lookout platforms are stunning, but you will share them with hundred of other tourists. At the far edge once you are over the bridge there is a separate section where they collect an entrance fee. Don't go into this... More

You can go there actually anytime. It is cool in the summer time. And breath taking in the winter time. Looking forward to go back soon!

I echo all positive reviews of the area. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains extend along the Elbe River from Saxony in SE Germany through Northern Bohemia in the Czech Republic. The mountains themselves are great for hiking and climbing, with spectacular views. The area in general is also great for cycling tours of several days, but beware of some decent inclinations... I have seen this report on TV where they have shown various landmarks and beautiful areas and we were supposed to guess where this was. My darling and me were shooting guesses like Australia, USA etc. and you should have seen our faces when it said: Germany. When we spent our long weekend in Dresden we decided to check it... More

climbing the rock faces via the ladders made the walking different and once up there wonderful views. Just looking at the facets of the rocks was intriguing. In many instances there are easier paths up than the ladders a good variety of scenerey

This excursion was from Bad Schandau - a half hour coach journey to the top of this scenic area of Saxony - the Bastei Rocks. From the coach park there is a pleasant ten minute walk under an avenue of trees or an optional pony trap ride to a cluster of Swiss type restaurants and gift shops. There awaits a... More

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains (Czech: Labské pískovce; German: Elbsandsteingebirge) is a mountain range straddling the border between the state of Saxony in southeastern Germany and the northern Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, with about ¾ of the area on the German side. The mountains are also referred to as Saxon Switzerland and Bohemian Switzerland in both German and Czech.... More
