My wife has such an affinity for this place that we go miles out of our way to witness it. There is just a magic feeling to view that rock jutting up fromthe forest surrounding it.

Wow! This is the a breathtaking summit that should not be missed if hiking in WNC. We decided to take our traditional New Year's Day hike and chose Looking Glass Rock. The ascent is sometimes very steep and rocky, but well worth it. There are plenty of places to stop and rest if needed. When we finally turned that last... More

Recently hiked with hubby and daughter, young adult. The website states moderately difficult. By New England standards it is a fairly easy hike. Lots of switchbacks for at least the first half. After that step areas with roots or rocks, but not difficult. Lots of families and dogs on the trail on our visit. It is approximately 6.4 miles round... More

2000 switch backs, a few stream crossings, and dozens of "we must be at the top by now, statements" and you will reach your reward. When you come out of the woods onto the bald rocks that stretch for 30-yards before falling off a 400-foot cliff, you will thank yourself for doing this hike. The views are awesome, so bring... More

It's fun, but just be warned! I suppose if you're not in a hurry it's not so bad. My wife and I got to the top in around an hour and a half, I think. The last quarter mile or so kicked our behinds—I thought I was on a stairmaster. To be honest, the view at the top was just... More

This mountain captured my attention immediately as it was not like all the others. It was not totally covered with green trees and flora. It has a huge round bald spot on the side of the mountain that supposedly reflects the sun at certain times. I wish I could have seen this spectacular event, but we were not there at... More

Our view of it was from the Looking Glass Rock overlook at mile marker 417 on the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRPW). This is also where the Skinny Dip Falls hike starts, but everyone was too tired for another hike so we took in the views of the parkway instead. You'll want to stop here and take some pictures.

Nice elevation gain. I hiked it during the week so I did not see many other hikers. Some pretty steep inclines but never felt the need to go with all fours at any time. A couple of nice views on the way up (have to use spur trails to see them but they are not far). I don't have the... More

Looking Glass Rock is beautiful from a distance. However, the rounded surface at the top gives an optical illusion that it is flat. Many people have fallen to their deaths from this place. I advise admiring it from a distance. Friends of ours lost their dog when well-meaning dog sitters took it and their dog to the top on a... More
